This complaint regards The Baldwin Building Apartments in Cincinnati, managed by Casto Communities Management in Columbus, Ohio. After touring the building in November, 2021 I provided a $350.00 deposit but did not sign a lease. Two members of my family are terminally ill, and ultimately, I released the apartment a full six weeks before it would have been available to occupy. In May, 2022 I advised Megan C, a leasing agent at The Baldwin that due to family circumstances, I was releasing the (occupied) unit to enable the property to lease it. The company had multiple tenants available to lease the apartment. These extenuating circumstances required a compassionate consideration in favor of refunding my deposit. ***** and her immediate supervisor at The Baldwin, ***** pledged to approach Casto for a refund given the nature of my circumstances. On April 8, I had not received a reply. Megan C denied my request by email. This is hardly a sterling example of good business practices. The judgement to keep my deposit was unjustified and frankly heartless. I feel that mediation in this instance is warranted.Business response

Good Afternoon,Attached is ******* ********* digital signature showing that ******* was fully aware of the non-refundable $50.00 Application Fee and $300.00 Admin Fee.If *******’s application were to have been denied, then ******* would have received the full $300.00 Admin Fee back however, ******* cancelled the application.In compliance with fair housing guidelines, we are unable to refund either of those Fees.If anything else is needed, please do not hesitate to let me know.Best,Customer response
