In June 2021, I asked asphalt contractors to quote to the cost of patching holes and coating the driveway at **** ********** **** ** ********t. We received several bids and selected Dagg’s Asphalt & Sealcoating. Dagg’s was repairing parking lots nearby and I liked the look of their equipment. A well know contractor also recommended Dagg’s. Their quote of June 12 is attached and I gave the go ahead shortly after receiving the quote. Dagg’s was working larger jobs, parking lot repair and finally got to our driveway the week of September 12th patching several smaller areas at the edge of the driveway and a big patch, 15’ x 10’, opposite the garage door. The patches at the edge of the drive looked great, asphalt was tight, smooth, and even (level) with the existing asphalt. However, the large patch was completely different, like it was a different material: you could see large pebbles on the surface and was not even close to being level with the exiting asphalt. The edges presented a potential trip hazard. The contract defined the specifics of the patches: “Asphalt Repair: Hot patch (400 SF) using ODOT # *** to existing level”. The large patch did not meet these criteria. As soon as I saw this patch; unless more work was to be done, the patch would be a problem. I called the project manager and followed up with a fax about my concern here. (Fax 9-27-2021). Dagg’s did not do anything, saying the patch would turn out ok. It never has; see in the large patch picture.. Also see the picture of the smaller patch that looks good. Dagg’s never tried to fix this problem, saying they did nothing wrong. However, due to my dissatisfaction they credited $300. My problem is we have to live with this patch where the edges are extremely rough and uneven, the asphalt patch material applied continually comes up. I have to sweep I have to sweep it off the drive and asphalt gets tracked into our home. I want this patch done properly and I am asking the BBB for help.

We did an asphalt patch and sealcoating project for *** ****** last years.  This was a small job and the customer was aware that it was a "filler" job because it required (2) crews, the asphalt crew to do the patch and sealcoating crew to crack fill and sealcoat.  The patch had to be completed prior to sealcoating the driveway and our asphalt crew was extremely busy on large commercial projects.  We send our asphalt crew out to do residential patch work on days when they are not doing commercial work.  The customer called our office constantly both before and after the job.  We sent our Sealcoating Manager out to look at the job and he said it was a good job - the patch looked good.  *** ****** continued to call.  The owner went out and looked at the patch and confirmed that the patch was good.  We believed that the customer had unrealistic expectations from an asphalt patch. Unless you cut out the asphalt (or grind it down) the asphalt will not be completely level with the old asphalt - we get it as level as we can with our power roller.  The work quoted was for an asphalt patch  - not asphalt removal and replacement.  After several conversation with *** ****** it became apparent that we would not be able to make him happy, so we gave him a discount of $362.00.  The customer agreed to pay us and we thought everything was good.  His first check bounced and we had to contact him and have him issue us an additional check.  We always strive to keep our customers happy but in this case we could not.  Please contact our office at ************ if you have any further questions.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
Last week I called Daggs as the large patch was braking up, stones & asphalt coming off.  ****** from Daggs called me to say the patch was to be coated last fall.  He said this job would be done when it warmed up, late May, earlier June.  Once coating is complete I will contact the BBB. Thank you
[To assist us in bringing this matter to a close, we would like to know your view on the matter.]

      Regards,

      ***** ******
