9/14/21 We contracted with Contractor ** to install siding on a rental property at **** ******* ***, **** OH for ~$14K. 11/20 Work was completed and final payment made. 11/21 the gable vent ring fell off. ** came and put it back on. 12/5 We noticed the top row of gable siding was beginning to fall. He said he'd come fix it, admitting that his worker didn't nail the top peak pieces in. He didn't come. 12/11 More top pieces were falling. He accused a storm. He promised to fix it. More pieces fell. ** now said he was out of state for the winter. 3/4/22 We contacted ** again. ** said he'd fix it when he got back from Okla. City. 4/18 ** said he would come May 16-20. Hot weather has arrived. Now the siding on the sunny south and west sides of the house is becoming wavy. In the coming weeks he made many excuses why he couldn't come repair the falling and wavy siding. He was getting married. His niece passed away. 6/27 He said he would "make sure it gets addressed." 6/30 he said he was "sick of messing with it" and offered some money back. Now the siding at the top of the walls began to fall off. We asked another contractor how much it would take to fix it. The quick estimate was $5000. ** declined stating, "not a chance.... $1000, if you're very lucky. ** then cited "multiple storms" since the work was completed and it was all storm damage and he wasn't responsible. We filed a storm damage claim with our insurance company. It was denied. The letter of denial included, "My inspection did not find any wind damages. I did notice the west side had improper installation where nails were driven too far in, and in most cases the nails were tight which did not allow the siding to expand and contract. In addition, I saw warped siding which can be caused by siding to tight due to over-driven nails combined with heat from the sun. Some siding was falling off due to improper installation." A detailed estimate of remove and reinstall correctly is $12.8K-15.2K.
