Went to EORH ER last night (03/11/2024) around midnight. Told the front desk lady I had been experiencing chest pain and lower right sided back pain, extreme chills and fatigue. I was so fatigued I began slumping over in the wheelchair only wearing three towels because I couldn’t even move enough to get clothes on before I showed up. Nobody took my vitals, performed an EKG to rule out heart attack, offered me a warm blanket. Nothing! I sat in the waiting room and after almost 30 minutes I went to the front window and told them it is completely unacceptable to not do an EKG within the first 30min upon arrival to rule out a possible heart attack. Let alone not take my vitals in case I was septic. Since I was experiencing chills, tachycardia, major fatigue, etc. While saying this another nurse came out and took the patient ahead of me. She went to ignore me but came over to see the issue since I was getting loud. I told her the same thing that I was an ER nurse and that this was not proper protocol. She tried demeaning me by asking how long I’d been a nurse. When we got to the ER room she told me to hop on the bed. I told her I couldn’t because I was severely fatigued. She gave a huge sigh of inconvenience and I told her that was unprofessional. Things rapidly began escalating as they refused to help me onto the bed. The nurse accused me of spitting on her to the police officers who had now joined the group. Which I quickly said I did not and got really upset. The nurse said I was crazy, acting like I was insane because I knew what I was talking about. Trying to make it appear like I was insane because I was asking for proper care. I told her very clearly this was medical neglect. I told them they were acting unprofessional and it was proper practice to have an EKG done within 30min after someone expresses about chest pain. The male police officer on staff yelled at me to shut up in a very aggressive way. He and his female partner were taunting me when I said I wanted everyone’s names and everyone was trying to find out where I worked. They (the police officer and the nurses) refused to push me out of the hospital and I was in severe pain after saying I refused care from such a staff. They made me sit there in the hospital wheelchair and kept mocking me all because I was telling them in an upset way that the care I was receiving was lacking to say the least. They were more concerned about finding out where I work so they could call me crazy rather than finding out what my medical ailment was. Unacceptable. I am a nurse and I have committed my life to helping people in need. The unprofessional conduct shown by the staff and police on duty were beyond unacceptable. The number one cause of death in America is heart disease. The nurses on staff said I wasn’t the most important case. Chest pain is a level 1 emergency! I hope someone reviews this hospital in depth as my neighbors son died from a missed diagnosis of heart attack at this very hospital. I have a video recording of the waiting room that I should use to sue for malpractice.

      Business response

Investigation on behalf of the hospital was completed. As reported from multiple staff members, patient was non compliant when care was attempted to be rendered while in the emergency department. Patient refused/ declined care attempted to be given. Police were called to assist with the matter. We are sorry if the patient feels services were not at the level she felt they should be and will strive for improvement to better meet the expectations of out patients and family.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********* and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

I do not accept this response from East Ohio Hospital. Their investigation is a sham and can easily be proven by the video footage from the body cameras from the ******* ***** ****** that night. Just like the incompetent medical care they provide the nurse lied about me spitting on her and that is the reason the police got involved. I was told to get on the bed multiple times (which I stated I couldn’t) by staff and they NEVER attempted to help me. Not even the Dr who came to talk with me! I should have pushed myself off the wheelchair and made it a formal issue for the hospital since their staff is completely incompetent. I refused care because I was not willing to work with the nurses so rudely and incompetently caring for me. They should have offered me another nurse and apologized for the massive oversight of not taking my vitals or offering me a hospital gown when I was in towels or done an EKG in the wheelchair when I complained of chest pain. Instead of spending all their time searching where I work! Which the charge nurse said couldn’t be done and is a complete fallacy! This hospital should be shut down. They do not honor their mission statement: “provide QUALITY, COMPASSIONATE, and state-of-the-art family centered health care, while promoting education and wellness.”
