According to AMA guidelines, a patient is considered a "New Patient" if they have not been seen by the practice within 3 years of the last date of service. This particular patient has not been seen by our practice since 2009 making his last visit 14 years ago so he is considered a New Patient and was charged a new patient office visit accordingly. He also had a skin biopsy done for a spot of concern that he had made the appointment for. The physician, using best practices, will often do a skin biopsy in order to make a correct diagnosis. The biopsy procedure is explained and consented to prior to the physician performing the biopsy. The patient's insurance was billed $404 for the office visit and procedure; however, the patient is only being billed $198.89 which the insurance determined was his deductible amount. The patient was given his biopsy results by phone. No billing adjustment will be made as the charges were billed correctly according to the services that he received.Customer response

I thought they passed a law called( No surprise act )So doesn’t that mean I should have been told about a unexpected charge like( new patient charges)I am sure the insurance company would not have paid what they did if a ( new patient charge) would have shown up on the bill.I wasn’t told about that until I questioned the price. If the office would have told me i would have never scheduled an appointment. On top of that I had to call and ask what was the results. Not just once but twice. I was told they needed to call and ask about it. The second time I called I got a response it was just a bug bit.I don’t really believe that because I have had it happen for years prior so was I bit in the exact same spot year after year?I feel as though they didn’t really need to do this test without trying some type of medical treatment first. So i don’t feel it’s a legitimate charge.
