After performing an auction for this person, they were happy with the services we provided. However, when the time came for customers to pick up their items, this person misplaced an item that was not sold in the auction. This started a spiral that began with him accusing us of being thieves and bringing bandits into his home to steal from him. The tirade continued with this person removing all the item numbering stickers that were used to identify items sold. This was done overnight between pickup days and the items were rearranged so as to keep us from knowing which items were which. He eventually found the item he had misplaced. It wasn’t stolen. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done. We did have pictures of each item sold, which we used to identify several of the things as customers continued to come pick up their items, which they had already paid for. In the middle of our last effort to remove what he had sold, he kicked us off the property, leaving us to sift through the customers who had not received their items or only received partial lots. We had to issue refunds, give discounts, and apologize to our customers for charging them for items they did not receive. This process took weeks as customers continued to call realizing they were missing items they paid for. Even after this person was paid, we had customers calling after realizing they never received items they paid for. Each of the items that were kept by this person was taken off the sell numbers, resulting in a loss for him as well as us. I’m not sure if he thought he would still get paid for items he kept, but that’s not how this business works. We have been a business in this community for 37 years and this is the first time we have ever had this much trouble from a consignor. It is unfortunate that he wants to tarnish our name, but had we used a formal contract rather than a handshake agreement, we would have taken him to court.
