    The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or a decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.

    On August 14, 2023, The Office of the Attorney General of the State of New York secured an Assurance of Discontinuance and $275,000 of civil relief from Avis Budget Group, Inc. for New York locations violating a state law prohibiting businesses from refusing to rent vehicles to persons without a credit card. The business agreed that they would not "...refuse to rent a motor vehicle to a person in New York solely because such a person does not own a credit card..." and "...shall not publish any advertisement or make any statement claiming or suggesting that ownership of a credit card is required to rent a motor vehicle..." The business also agreed to adopt written policies, employee trainings, and periodic compliance reports to ensure the New York locations were in compliance with the state law. Finally, the business agreed to pay the State of New York $275,000 in penalties.

      On 8/3 at 5:18am at *********** in *******, **, I purchased a car rental for the day with my reservation being made online. I picked up the car and drove it to ********, **. Because I had a red-eye flight, I took the car home and slept for a few hours before returning it. I returned the car to the Avis counter at the *********** in ********, **, on the same day (8/3) 15 minutes before their counter closed for the day. There were three employees there and there was a long line of people at the counter. One of the employees asked me "are you just returning a car?", to which I replied "Yes". The gentleman told me I could drop my keys and the rental agreement in a box on the counter. I did so, turning the car in, and left the premises. Two days later I received my rental receipt, showing that I had 2 additional days on the rental, which increased my bill from the $75.74 shown on the confirmation, to $189.49. Upon calling the local Avis desk and the main customer service number, there has been no resolve for the overcharge.

      First off, I waited a very long time in a very short line. I paid extra for an upgrade, and when we finally got to the truck we found it had been smoked in, food wrappers and half drank drinks left in the cup holders. I have a 6 month old baby that was ****** exhausted from traveling so we had no choice but to take it. There was no way I could drag the family back through the line. I was extremely embarrassed when I dropped the truck off to the resort valet, as tge commented on how dirty it was. Last resort if you are renting a vehicle for a family vacation!
