I had a cat - ******* - purchased from the BCHS back in Oct. '20. to shorten story; she had to be put down due to congestive heart failure, late Nov. '22. then in late Dec. '22 I filled an application with the BCHS to obtain another/replacement cat.. they would not sell me another cat because I was truthful on the application that I have to have the cat declawed. at my age - 81+ - I can't take the chance of getting/having things/furniture scratched/torn or myself getting scratched... all my cats had been declawed with NO adverse situations/conditions.. all were well, for their time.. they were all indoor cats.. I need a replacement because of my living situation; emotional case would be better with a pet - cat..

We encourage new adopters looking for a declawed cat to adopt a cat that has already been declawed. If we currently do not have a declawed cat, we will work with other rescues to find a declawed cat. We offer this to anyone asking or replying that they will be declawing a cat adopted from us.

**** ******** adopted a five-month-old kitten from the Beaver County Humane Society on December 28, 2021.

On January 3, 2022, one of our veterinary technicians spoke with **** because the kitten (******) had been sneezing a lot. The technician mentioned that, as disclosed during the adoption, the kitten had been in our isolation area with an Upper Respiratory Infection (URI); that the symptoms resolved; and that the kitten was neutered and placed up for adoption. She explained that stress from the surgery and a new home can often cause a URI to flare up again.

**** said he did not go through any paperwork or records in his adoption folder and did not recall us telling him that the kitten had been treated for a UTI.  Our technician explained that as part of the adoption, he received a Healthy Start Certificate to use in instances such as this.  Our adoption counselors review everything we provide in our adoption packets with each adopter. This includes a variety of information, including the kitten’s medical and surgical history as well as the Healthy Start Certificate. The Healthy Start Certificate provides a complimentary health exam at any VCA animal hospital location and gave him locations to call to make appt. The Certificate also provides a complimentary 14-day follow up care for any of the following conditions ($250 maximum coverage).

      Upper Respiratory Infections (URI)
      Diarrhea of infectious origin
      Internal parasites
      Ear and eye infections
      Suture removal
      Vomiting of infectious origin
      Common skin disorders
      Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

On January 8, 2022, the technician again spoke to **** about his adopted kitten ******* **** stated that he felt that we were lying abou* ******** medical condition, and he would only return the kitten to us if we gave him a refund. Our technician explained that we did review and provide him with ******** medical records and that **** had actually signed off that he saw the records and read about URI.  The technician also explained that we do not provide refunds. That’s clearly stated on the adoption contract that he signed. He kept repeating that we never told him Harvey had been sick before. The technician told **** that the information is in the medical records that he received when adopting the kitten, and that the kitten was healthy at time of adoption. **** said he was going to give the antibiotics a few more days, but then call us if he still wants to return the kitten. The technician said he is welcome to return the kitten, but as stated on the adoption contract , we do not provide refunds.

Attached please find the following information provided to **** at the time of ******** adoption.

      ****’s signed and initialed contract
Medical information reviewed at the time of adoption and included in the adoption packet
Healthy Start Certificate reviewed at time of adoption and including in the adoption packet
Cat adoption packet, including information on URI’s that is reviewed with adopter (page 14)

Please let me know if you need any additional information, and I would appreciate being notified about the outcome of this complaint.
