Renter informed me that the roof of our rental property at *** ******* ****** ********** ** was leaking. Contacted Champion Roofing who sent salesman, Terry C******, to inspect attic and take measurements to give estimate on new roof. Mr C****** identified more areas of roof were leaking in addition to the leak the renter had identified. Roofing contract with Champion Roofing salesman signed for rental property on October 23, 2022. Salesman said that roof would have tarps put in place so that roof wouldn't leak during the winter until new roof could be installed in Spring. This is a fairly standard practice when leaks are involved to protect house. After several emails and calls trying to get the company to come do the tarp work, a single tarp was finally put in place over part of the roof the weekend before Thanksgiving (about 1 month later). Existing renter moved out in early December and I began preparing house for new renter. Informed Champion on 31 December that it looked like there was a part of the roof that was missing shingles. This area had not been covered with a tarp. Main leak in attic ceiling seemed to be growing. Informed Champion's salesman on January 4, 2023 that existing leak area was wet. Clearly, not all leaking areas of the roof were appropriately covered for winter. Salesman said he would come out and look at it when he was in the area. He never came out. New renters moved in on 6 Jan. New renters asked about leak and I informed them I was waiting to hear back from Champion. Heavy rains occurred during MLK week. New renters report that attic is leaking on 19th of January and put bucket under leak. Notified Champion that water was coming in. Asked that Champion come back out and do additional roofing tarps to protect until the spring time roof installation can be done per agreement. Owner finally called and agreed to come back out next clear day. That was 3 weeks ago and there have been many clear days and nothing has been done.

      Complaint ID ******** submitted 2/17/2023

I am constructing a timeline of correspondence with ***** ******* I am attaching the proposal, contract, and supporting photos that his claims are false.

October 13, 2022- ***** called in requesting an estimate on *** ******* **** ********* telling the receptionist that roof looks torn up, but there were no leaks (See attached document for estimate #8670)

October 17, 2022- Terry C****** was scheduled for an estimate and took multiple photos showing the horrendous condition of the roof with multiple leaks and damage. Photos were uploaded into ***** Groves' file live while Terry was completing inspection of the roof/attic between 2:51pm and 3:29pm. (See pictures below. Attic damage picture to compare is attached)

October 18, 2022- Terry emailed the estimate to *****. (See attached Roofing Proposal # 3465)

October 24, 2022-  ***** signed a contract with Champion Roofing and gave $100.00 deposit (check #393) to hold his place for roof replacement in the spring. Champion Roofing opted to schedule a tarp to be placed over the major leak area to try to prevent further damage until roof could be put on and look at a loose shingle at another location owned by *****. (See attached contract #774)

October 25, 2022- Champion Roofing office made a work order for tarp to be placed and loose shingle looked at on **** **. (See attached work order #1685)

November 9, 2022- DJ and Alex Z******** went to *** ******* ** to attempt to place tarp on the roof. Between the wind and the rotted wood they could not get the nails to hold the tarp in place, so they opted to wait for a windless
day and another person  to help to tarp the roof. They then went to *** **** *** ********* and fixed a loose shingle for ***** at no charge.

November 10, 2022- ***** called complaining about tarp not being placed on the roof November 9 th , and it was explained to him that it was too windy and that with the roof condition we needed an extra man helping to place a tarp on that roof. Our repair team is a 2 man team and we would have to find room in their schedule to match with someone
else’s schedule to place the tarp.

November 11, 2022- ***** called multiple times complaining that the tarp was not placed yet.

November 15, 2022- ***** called again asking about tarp being placed.

November 23, 2022- Tarp was placed over the area that the homeowner indicated it was needed.

November 28, 2022- ***** emailed Terry thanking him for the tarp on the roof and said he would see us sometime in the spring. (See attached)

January 19, 2022- ***** emailed Terry about the roof still leaking. He was told that we have a contract to install a new roof in the spring, not to keep repairing the current roof. (See attached)

January 20, 2023- ***** emailed Terry pictures of supposed further roof damage after tarp was placed (see attached), but if you compare the ‘more damage’ to the picture Terry uploaded on October 17, 2022 when he was first there it looks the same. Furthermore, you will see that nowhere in our contract does it state anything about tarping or no further leak damage. This is all quite a stretch coming from someone who called October 13, 2022 claiming no leaks at all. We went above and beyond our contract with him and he continues to make false claims. We ask that his complaint be removed from our company.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

      Champion Roofing Altoona LLC

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********* and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

I notice that the labeled pick for Jan 20 was incorrect and was just a duplicate of the first one.  Correcting.  This leak is on the other side of the roof than the area that was covered in a tarp and is the primary leak for which Champion was called in for in the first place and was the only leak I knew of at the time champion was called. Mr C****** found additional leaks upon his inspection.  As the business admits, they agreed to place tarps to cover for the leaks.  As the roof is still leaking, they have failed to do what they agreed to do.  Also, you can see from the business's response and timeline that they have been completely uncooperative with covering the roof at all to protect it from damage as I had to call numerous times just to get them out to do what they were supposed to do.  And it took them an entire month just to get 1 tarp in place.  I have never dealt with roofers who are more afraid to climb on a roof in mild weather with slight breezes.  As of this writing, they have still not come out to place a second tarp or any cover on the house and more damage is continuing to occur. As for the company claiming there were no leaks at all on October 13 there clearly was from the picture I provided  What was stated was that I did not know if it was a leak or caused by heat.  The Champion salesmen determined that it was a leak and his inspection of the house attic determined that there were additional leaks which I did not know about and which they agreed to cover with tarps. Another month has now passed and still no cover placed for this leak.  This means it is now going on 5 months with this company not doing what they agreed to do on Oct 24th when the contract was signed and which they admit in their response that they had chose to do.

By the way, the shingle on **** **reet has nothing to do with this contact and was mentioned after the contract was signed and the salesman indicated they could do it. I was asked to provide the shingles used because for some reason, this roofing company had no shingles available. Luckily, after a while searching, I found shingles left from when that roof had been done.  I had asked about this because one of the reviews for Champion mentioned that they had done this for another person too so I figured there was no harm in asking.  If they did not want to do this, the salesman could have simply said no. In which case, I would have simply called a handyman to do it.

      Regards,

      ***** ******
