This customer came to our shop requesting a basic in-frame engine overhaul. The job was completed on 1/22/21. The requested service was a basic in-frame engine overhaul. (This means it's rebuilt without removing the engine from the truck) On 2/15/21 the customer returned with the truck and had a complaint of an oil leak. We determined the leak was from the air compressor, which is totally unrelated. We replaced the air compressor and water pump at the customer's request. After completion, we ran the truck and no leaks whatsoever were present. The truck was then released to the customer. On 8/31/21 the customer returned with the truck with a complaint of an oil leak. We determined it was leaking from the front engine structure, which is also unrelated to original services that he requested. With the customer's approval, we proceeded to remove and re-seal the front structure. Upon completion we tested for leaks. We confirmed no leaks were found, so we called the customer to come get the truck. When the customer arrived, we presented the bill for the repairs. He became frustrated and we explained that any work pertaining to the front structure was not included in a basic overhaul which is what he had requested originally. After going around in circles, we told the customer to take the truck and we would just take the loss. Sometime thereafter the customer said that his engine had failed. We told the customer to get the truck to us so we could determine the failure and come up with a solution. Instead, he took the truck somewhere else and they replaced the engine. The customer kept calling looking for a solution but was never able to bring the truck to us. We told him that we could not help if the truck was not here.
The work performed on 2/15/21 and 8/30/21 is/was additional work and is/was not part of the basic overhaul per industry standards. We properly performed what was requested by the customer. In addition, we offered to assist and he voluntarily chose to go elsewhere to resolve the matter.
