I had a problem in the Ridgeland office with getting my address changed. They wanted a change of address form from the post office, but that was a problem as I would not have that until after I had moved, but I still needed to get my mail at my current address in the meantime. I asked if I could get an email sent from my really estate agent confirming my new address. I was told that would work, and I did that, but the account address was not changed. I contacted the bank, and it was changed. I had another problem when I lived in Charleston with a check order that I placed with the call center in Orangeburg. I Placed it but never received the checks. I finally got that straightened out. My last problem is with atm charges. When I opened my first account, there was no charge for using any atm, but that did not last, and they began charging $3:for a foreign atm fee. I knew they got charged so that was fair. My last atm withdrawal had the foreign atm plus another $3:atm fee by SOUTH STATE. I emailed Anthony Galletta of the South Aiken branch who insisted that this had always been the practice. It had not, and $6 everytime one needs cash is excessive. This bank rips off its customers and should be avoided.Review from Andi E

SouthState Bank is the least professional and least trustworthy bank I have ever had the displeasure of banking with. I have used them for only 3 years. For reference, my other banking relationships are more than 25 years long and have been without issue. My mortgage was sold to SouthState Bank, and I kept them to prevent additional fees associated with another change. Communication from them is exceedingly rude. I have never been late with a payment nor had any issue that could cause this treatment. Today, I received a letter informing me of an “unauthorized incident” with my info. Fourth paragraph last line was the first indication of their plan to prevent a recurrence, “SouthState is actively taking steps to further enhance our EXISTING security measures”, without mention of what steps that entails. Also included as the last line of the letter was the feeble apology; “We regret any inconvenience or concern this incident may have caused…” Do yourself a favor; DO NOT USE THIS BANK!Review from GW D

I am concerned about a letter I received from: South State, Secure Processing Center, PO Box 3829, Suwanee, GA 30024. The letter states that that there was a data breach, and my information was compromised. I was offered a complimentary credit monitoring service through a company named Identity Defense Total. Of course they look forward to continuing to service my accounts. The trouble is, I do not and never have banked with South State Bank. I see no reason why they would have my information and I am not pleased that it was compromised. I called the number provided in the letter and was read a prepared statement. When I inquired as to what information was obtained by the breach, I was told someone would have to call me back to provide this information. Research on the internet tells me that South State did suffer a data breach around the time stated in the letter, but I am leery of a scam to get me to call or go online to provide further information to allow a theft of my identity. I would like to know this is a legitimate letter before signing up with Identity Defense Total.Review from Colleen J

By far the worst experience we have ever had with a bank! We used SouthState for a construction loan in 2021 and we literally had to chase down every draw, take our own draw photos, and do basically everything for them. When we went to modify our construction loan in January of 2022, they ran my credit without my consent. Fast forward to selling our home on 2/29/2024…I canceled my automatic draft with them in early February, the title company wired our payoff on 2/29/2024, AND THEY STILL DEDUCTED MY MORTGAGE PAYMENT ON 3/1! Trying to get my $2500 back has become an absolute nightmare! Do yourself a favor and just find another lender. You’ll be glad you did!Review from Robert M

This rating should be zero but they make me leave at least 1 star. I just had my credit card from south state closed with no notification. I pay on time and have not had any transactions except for one which I am making a monthly payment on time for. I called to see why I could not access my account online with IT and was notified then. Due to an 3rd party helping me find them and apply they then waited 4 months to state that isn’t allowed. Why approve in the first place. I would be fine with the closure but afterward they stated I was still liable for debt even though I can no longer access account online to check on balance or pay. They stated I can only pay them by check or money order through the mail and can only rely on statements they send out but can’t very with any other source. The customer service person had to actually go over to verification department since she could not even access the account. I was left adrift without any options except their way of payment and can’t according to them balance transfer to another bank credit card that helps me and I can communicate appropriately with. The Florida bar should really look into this shady bank.Review from Jessica L

Horrible bank. In the 4 years I was with them I had to have replacement debit cards sent 5 times for fraudulent activity. I opened a credit card with them 13 months ago and had it frozen and ultimately closed after the full balance was paid off on it. I opened a second checking account that was active for several months until one day I logged on and the bank account was deactivated with no warning. I will never recommend them or bank with them again.Review from Sharon T

I recd a check drawn on South State. South State made a mistake and the check bounced. Bank error not their clients fault. Josh N from the Rockhill SC branch sent a cashiers check to cover the bounced check. Not sure why but my bank, who also made mistakes and sucks (Wells Fargo) my bank is suspicious of this cashiers check, deposited w a hold, fine I get it. But now my bank is closing all of my accounts due to fraud. Not my fraud but South States fraud on my account. I am mad!!!Review from Michael H

WORST BANK EVER!!! Freezes accounts randomly, can't access money, balance info, or even get a real person on the 24 hr online help or phone line!!!! How can you be declined when asking for balance!!! Horrible automated system states that it can't give a reason for balance inquiry being declined and hangs up on you. This is not an uncommon occurrence. They have ONE job!!! Manage money!!! And FAIL miserably!! Do not open an account here if you actually want access to your money, or decent customer support!!!
