My husband and I moved on June 18 and 19th of 2023 from 4100 sq. ft. house in Seneca, SC into 3 storage units (one climate controlled and 2 non-CC) until our new house was ready to move into. Our furniture was high end along with antiques and a lot of expensive art work. We chose Carey Movers out of Greer based on reviews online and price we were quoted. This was the biggest mistake we have ever made. When we had our furniture moved out of storage and into our new house, we discovered the majority of our nice furniture was either broken, dented, smashed, marred, scratched, destroyed and some items totally missing. Items that should have been put in the climate-controlled unit were not and were either damaged or destroyed. After seeing all the damage and destruction of our furniture one would assume that the crew didn’t have any experience what so ever, but I was told by the owner, they were extremely experienced. When you pack a commissioned piece of art with tools, use packing tape directly on leather furniture, not wrap furniture properly and load heavy furniture on top of light weight furniture, it gets broken or damaged! When your items go into storage units, you find out later what disaster looks like when the items are moved out. Thankfully, we chose a different moving company with no issues. We paid to have some of the items repaired, but some were family heirlooms and are irreplaceable. I have moved over 18 times up and down the East and mid-West in my life and used numerous companies with few if any issues. Carey Movers was horrible!!! They don’t deserve a star at all.

tl;dr - Do not use this company to move your belongings! Much of our home furnishings were damaged, broken, or scratched due to packing on the truck and loading or unloading rush. We chose to pack our own belongings. We opted to purchase insurance to cover damages. When I filed the claim I was informed that the insurance did not cover damage to items not packed by them. Then why did they ask me if I wanted insurance since they knew we were going to pack ourselves? The lack of care to our belongings was enough for us to not use this company again, but this scam of selling insurance for something they know they are not going to cover amounts to fraud which they should be held accountable for by the legal system! Unfortunately they know that the average consumer does not have the resources to put forth the fight so they get away with it.

There were many emails between the customer and myself. The customer was claiming items that were packed in plastic totes by the customers. No cartons packed by owners or plastic bins are covered at the valuation that the customer chooses to take due to the fact that they have not been professionally packed. We do not sell insurance as we are not an insurance company, but the customer does have the option to purchase valuation to cover broken items. The customer has failed to mention that he had a flatscreen TV that he claimed and due to Inherent vice, these are not normally covered, but as a goodwill gesture we did send the customer a check in the amount of $430 to cover the cost to replace his TV same exact model.

I am happy to show the photos and correspondence. Is there a way to add attachments to these reviews? Several containers were damaged by the improper handling. As for the items that were damaged in one of the containers, the container was at the top of a stack of five or six containers and when they were rolling the stack off of the truck, the container fell to the ground. Many items were broken in addition to that container. Had Carey handled the move with even just a slight amount of care, none of the containers would have been broken. And dropping a container from over 5 feet... again, care in moving would have avoided that. I don't know what kind of packing would have avoided breaking items dropped from that height. The main issue is that they sold the insurance knowing we were packing our own belongings... knowing that the insurance would not cover damage to our belongings. They should not have sold the $525 insurance policy knowing that damage would not be covered. They may not be the insurer, but they act as an agent of the insurance company by offering insurance. Doing so when the coverage does not cover the primary reason for a consumer taking out the insurance is fraudulent business practice.
