On February 7, 2022, Better Business Bureau opened an investigation against Teekay Navigation, LLC regarding its employment hiring process and business practices after receiving Scam Tracker submissions and phone calls from consumers and/or potential employees that were hired by the business. The business appears to be legitimate in regards to its registration with SC Secretary of State and claims to be located in Greer, SC. However, it has been confirmed that the address location in Greer, SC is a multi-unit warehouse with units for lease, no suite numbers are assigned to any of the units, and the property listing agent confirmed that a business by the name of Teekay Navigation, LLC is not, nor has ever been, located at that property.
To date, BBB has received (16) Scam Tracker submissions from consumers, (1) consumer phone call and (2) consumer complaints against this business, all regarding the hiring process and job description duties required by the business. Each consumer/employee has stated that they were contacted by the supposed human resources representative of the business via email or text after the business had supposedly reviewed their resume on a well-known employment listing site. Each potential employee was then offered a package handler position with a large competitive monthly salary with additional bonus pay per package shipped. The human resources representative then becomes very persistent with the potential employee via emails and/or texts urging them to complete their employee information form that includes their personal information, banking information and a copy of their drivers license. Some consumers actually held phone interviews with the supposed HR representative, however, no virtual or in-person interviews were conducted.
Once the employees accepted the job offer and provided the requested information, the consumers/employees then begin to receive packages at their residence. They are to inspect the packages for any damage and then reship the packages to another destination provided to them through their employee dashboard. The employee is responsible for the reshipping costs of the packages. Consumers/Employees are then expecting their salary to be direct deposited at the month end into their bank account along with their per package bonuses which would basically cover the costs of the reshipped packages, however, when payday arrives, no check/funds are deposited. Consumers/Employees have attempted to make contact via phone and/or email with their supposed supervisors and/or the human resources department but are only able to leave a message on voicemail and receive no call back or they do not receive any responses to their emails. Consumers/Employees are then locked out of their employee dashboard and out of their salary as well as the costs for the reshipping charges.
BBB has made attempts to reach a Teekay Navigation, LLC representative via the numerous phone numbers and emails provided by the consumers/employees. Each email attempt has received no response. Each phone attempt was either met with a directory and then voicemail or the automated operator states that the call cannot be completed at this time and then the call is disconnected. BBB has left several voicemail messages requesting a call back, but no return calls have been received.
On February 10, 2022, BBB issued a press release and on February 22, 2022 a local media outlet reported the story warning consumers of this scam/fake business. BBB recommends thoroughly researching any company that you are attempting to gain employment, be wary of jobs that offer high-paying positions that require little to no experience or education training or licensing, watch out for job offers that do not require in-person or virtual interviews, and never give confidential or personal information via phone, text, or email before checking a company's legitimacy.
