I stayed at Briarcliffe RV Resort (10495 N Kings Hwy, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572-5708, from 6/5/22 through 6/18/22. I am chronically ill and have been on SS Disability for several years. My 85 year old father was also with me on this trip, and he is also physically disabled (we both have DMV issued handicapped placards). Since we were both having problems with ability to access all of the facilities due to walking distance from our site (restrooms/showers, laundry rooms, pool facilities, store, events, etc.), I contacted the office via email about use of privately owned golf carts for disabled individuals on the property. They said they did allow use of private golf carts but there was a daily fee to use them, even for disabled persons. I informed them that the US Department of Justice/ADA ruled that golf carts were approved mobility devices, just like scooters, electric wheelchairs, segues, etc., and that it was up to the disabled person to choose which mobility device best served their needs. We corresponded in a series of emails the week following June 10th, and some later on trying to resolve the matter, in which they informed me the daily fee would not be waived for disabled persons. They are no longer willing to address the matter with me. This is a problem economically, since my only income is SS Disability, and a serious problem in regard to equal access rights. Without the assistance of my DOJ approved mobility device, it is not possible for my father and I to access all the amenities and services the resort offers. To charge a fee for disabled persons to use their own approved disability mobility devices is at best unethical, and most likely not in the spirit of the law/regulations under DOJ rulings. Please assist me in working to have such policies changed for those able to prove handicapped/disabled, via a DMV issued placard. To charge disabled persons a fee to use a personally owned mobility device in a public place is reprehensible.
