A few weeks ago I sought online for a source for gravel for my driveway, approximately an eighth of a mile long. I'd had gravel delivered twice before, spread along my driveway by the simple expedient of driving its length and letting the gravel spill as the truck proceeded. I found this a very satisfactory way of keeping my driveway maintained and free of ruts, while being permeable, allowing rainwater to penetrate into the ground. Both previous graveling operations had gone without difficulty. I settled upon a company called Acadia (without an "r") on Middlebrook Pike and discussed my goal with two employees there, ****h and Lynn. I described the driveway as accurately as I could, mostly a simple straight shot except for a slight turn near the road and a short hill at the top. Again, the two previous suppliers had had no difficulty, though several years had passed since the last one. I also walked the length of the driveway while making a video, which I sent them. Their driver, ****, said their large dump truck might have trouble maneuvering his ten-ton dump truck at the top of the slight hill, and I acknowledged that difficulty and agreed to pouring a small part of the load in a pile there for me to distribute by hand, the rest of the load to be poured along the straight part of the driveway short of the hill. **** delivered the ten tons of gravel, 1/4th crusher run and 3/4ths 157 at the appointed time and confirmed he'd not be able to spread the gravel at the upper end of the driveway, as he'd already advised in our discussions. I asked him to go ahead and pour a small amount for me to spread with shovel and wheelbarrow. He began dumping the load, but then did not pause until I shouted at him. Apparently he'd intended to dump the entire load at the top of the hill, leaving me, almost 78 years old, to spred the whole thing by hand. After my protest he poured the rest of the load elsewhere. Acadia told me they'd come back and spread it all for $500 more.
