2/14- We took our vehicle to ******* ** in order to get our brake line fixed. Our brakes were still operational at this time, I had just noticed our car was taking longer to stop then it normally did. While ******* was working on our brake line, I received a call from ***** at ******* **, saying he also found rust on our fuel pump, and asked us if we would like him to replace it. We agreed. We were told that both of these issues were fixed and paid $701.30 on 02/14/22 to fix these issues.I was able to drive my car off of the ******* lot, however after getting it home the very next day, it had trouble starting. The engine would not turn over to fully start. This had never been an issue before. This issue ran as a camshaft sensor error and ***** told me he was not able to perform this job, so we took it to the dealership. After inspection, the dealer found issues with our brake lines and fuel pump.(attached doc)4/13 - I did not ask for a refund, but asked if he would be willing to pay another mechanic to fix the specific brake line and fuel pump issues he had caused, that we had already paid him to repair. We were hoping to be able to reach an agreement without involving legal action, and also to alert ***** about the work of the mechanic assigned to our car. ***** refused to pay for the damages caused by ******* ** to be repaired by another mechanic. He did offer to fix the issues he created, but I told him we were not comfortable with having any other work done by *******. We feel that our lives were put in unnecessary danger from an improperly installed brake line and fuel pump. We feel that with the scale of problems created after the work done by *******, this is either a case of gross negligence/ lack of quality checks, or mechanical malpractice that took advantage of our lack of knowledge about cars, and may endanger other people who just want to get their car fixed. To add to the stress I have been without a car for almost 1 month now, walking to work.

      Business response

      05/05/2022

This customer came in with a concern of low brake pressure and smell of gas. We found the car was severely rusted and the brake line was extremely compromised.
It was our professional opinion that the fuel and fumes of gas was present due to a fuel pump gasket leak. ******* *** informed the customer the rust was extensive and that would be an ever-growing problem.
The part should be replaced and also there will be future issues due to rust and corrosion. The fitting on the fuel pump and the hold down bolts for the fuel tank were breaking due to corrosion. The costumer was advised to sell vehicle because of rust.
I researched the claim and the paperwork the complainant filed. The repair he wishes for ******* to fix is for the code DTCode P0340. This code is a cam shaft sensor error. This particular error will cause the car engine not to start. DTCode P0340 is not any way affected by a brake or fuel repair.
This customer's NEWLY needed repair is not associated with our work nor our responsibility.
******* *** received this letter on April 28,2022. in the body of the letter, it requested response by April 29,2022.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
We are really disappointed in this response. ******* never advised us to sell our car, or ever mentioned that repairs would be difficult due to rust damage. We brought our car in to ******* initially because we noticed the brake pressure was low. While our car was at 61 tire for a brake job, they did alert us that our fuel pump had rust on it, and asked if we would like them to replace it. We agreed and we paid ******* to replace the fuel pump along with the brake job as documentation shows. But there was never any discussion of extensive rust damage that couldn't be fixed or that we should sell the car. ******* is not being truthful which is frustrating.

If we had been told that the rust damage was too extensive, we may not have proceeded with repairs. But regardless, we paid ******* to fix our brakes and fuel pump, and we unknowingly left with a leaking brake line and a fuel pump that was missing a gasket and spilling out fuel. This is all explicitly documented in the technician's report from the ******* dealership (which is attached).

The day after we got the car back from *******, it wouldn't start (this had never been a problem before). So we took our car to AutoZone because they run a diagnostic for free. This is where we were told it may be a cam shaft sensor problem. We called ***** at *******, but he said he didn't do that type of repair. So that is when we took our car to the ******* dealership. At this time, we did believe it was a separate issue from *******'s repairs. But after the technician at ******* called us, he told us our brake line was leaking and improperly installed and that our fuel pump had bolts cut off and was missing a gasket and fuel was spilling everywhere (the technician told us this was the reason our car wouldn't start). We understand that our car likely does have some rust damage, we purchased it in *******, ** where rust is a common issue due to ice/snow/salt on the roads. But the rust did not stop another mechanic from successfully fixing our car (repairs completed on 04/29/2022). This repair shop did not mention any rust damage, just that the brake lines and fuel pump were improperly installed and that they needed to be repaired. We have now paid another mechanic $1,364.19 to fix the issues caused by *******'s lack of proper repair. We are really disappointed in the dishonesty and negligence in how ***** at ******* has handled this. If ***** had taken the time to read the detailed report from the ******* dealership technician, he would have seen it clearly states the issues found were with the fuel pump and brake lines and not the cam shaft sensor.

We never expected or asked ******* to pay for repair of a cam shaft issue. We only asked that ******* pay another mechanic, that we could trust, to complete the repairs we had originally paid ******* for (only the brake line and fuel pump). We were very clear about this. We tried to work out this agreement nicely with ***** in person, but he refused to pay another mechanic. He also stated he would not give us a refund (we never even asked for a refund from him). ******* refused to pay for the damages they have caused and have taken no responsibility for the negligence/fraud that has taken place.

Unfortunately, this process has not helped us rectify the issue which is clear by the dishonest online response we received, as well as ******* response to our discussion in person. As already discussed with ***** in person, we are now moving to our last resort and will be taking legal action against *******. We hope no one else is harmed by the negligence and fraudulent behavior of *******.
