          Businesses that use music in public places such as restaurants, nightclubs, discos, retail stores, health clubs, amusement parks and many other establishments may be contacted by BMI as an attempt to properly license the business for music performance per US Copyright Law (Title 17, United States Code, Sec. 101 et seq). Should a user refuse to enter into a BMI music performance agreement but continues to publicly perform BMI-licensed music without permission, BMI will enforce the public performance right through a lawsuit for copyright infringement.

          Products and Services
          BMI is a company which holds public performance rights to musical compositions on behalf of approximately 300,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in all genres of music. Businesses pay a fee to the company for the right to perform, have performed or broadcast music for which BMI represents the copyright holder.

          A business which wants to use copyrighted music signs a contract with BMI and becomes a licensee. It can then make an unlimited number of "nondramatic performances" of any BMI music without having to keep records as to the actual music played. Fees charged by BMI to a business depend upon the size of the business. Otherwise, in order to abide by the US copyright law, a business owner would have to negotiate with individual copyright holders to use their music in a place of business.
