On May 10, 2021, I received services from Hillside Hospital. Unfortunately, when I received a requested itemized statement from Hillside Hospital and from Dr. Gordan ***** / TeamHealth for the treatment I received on May 10, 2021, I discovered a discrepancy between hospital coding and Dr. *****'s coding for the level of suture repair that I received and it was mistakenly recorded on the medical records that I was administered clindamycin via IV. In addition, I discovered that I was coded by the hospital at a Level 4 (problem of high severity) emergency room visit and I was not given fair and customary prices for services rendered. After receiving treatment for a Simple Suture Repair, I was upcoded by Dr. ***** from a Simple Suture Repair to an Intermediate Suture Repair, even though the hospital coded for a Simple Suture Repair. Yet, both the hospital and Dr. ***** upcoded my emergency room visit to a Level IV for a non bleeding, less than 2.5 cm superficial cut that was "not heavily contaminated and did not require extensive cleaning or removal of particulate matter." The cut required only 6 sutures. From check in to discharge, I was in and out of the emergency room in less than one hour. During my visit, I asked hospital staff multiple times about pricing and insurance coverage to which I was told "my insurance would cover treatment." Had I known prices for services prior to treatment, I would have been able to make an informed decision about my treatment. However, nowhere in the hospital or on the hospital website did I have access to what The Hospital Transparency Rule mandates: "Starting January 1, 2021, each hospital operating in the United States will be required to provide clear, accessible pricing information online about the items and services they provide in two ways: 1. As a comprehensive machine-readable file with all items and services. 2. In a display of shoppable services in a consumer-friendly format." CMS Gov
