My granddaughter was enrolled at Sylvan Learning in February 2023. As a 1st grader, she needed help with her reading. An assessment was completed and a plan was developed. We were told that she needed 150 hours to get her to mid 2nd grade reading level. Those 150 hours would take her through the end of October. So we paid for 150 hours. In August, there was a tuition special, so on August 31st we purchased an additional 100 hours which would start on November 1st. We were told that the additional 100 hours would help to strengthen her reading even more. During a meeting on September 12th with the new Director, we informed her that we would be withdrawing my granddaughter if we didnt see some major progress. She then asked us to give her an opportunity to personally work with my granddaughter. In mid October, the 2nd grade teacher at my granddaughters school informed us that my granddaughter was reading at an early 1st grade level. On the morning of October 25th the Director informed us that we had 104 hours left. Later on October 25th we informed her that we would be withdrawing my granddaughter effective November 1st. She asked that we send her an email which we sent. On October 26th, I dropped my granddaughter off at 3:25 pm and left to run an errand. I returned at 3:40 pm to find my granddaughter with her head on the desk with no teacher and no instructions occurring. The Director walked out of her office and stated that the teacher was running late. At 3:50 there was still no teacher so we left. The Director came out to my car and said that my granddaughter wasnt on the schedule for today, which was her regularly scheduled day.Several emails have been sent to the Director and owners requesting a refund of $4,053.00. This fee includes the $3,915.00 paid on August 31st plus the remaining 4 hours previously paid. After almost 6 weeks, we havent heard from the owners. Therefore, I am requesting your assistance for a full refund per their policy.Business response

I am rejecting this response because: Sylvan did refund monies owed, however, the owners refused to respond to my concerns and refused to communicate entirely. It wasnt until I contacted Sylvan CEO and the BBB that a refund was issued. From my experience, I want parents to know that this Sylvan does not have their children best interest in mind. They seem to only be interested in getting their finances. Based on my experience, there is a lack of clear and accurate communication regarding the childs progress. The progress is misleading. I suggest that parents delve deeper into their childs learning and progress. I also suggest that parents stay with their children and be more vigilant. Theres no accountability when questioned about your childs educational achievements. Again, there is a lack of professionalism at all levels of the Cedar Hill location.Initial Complaint

I, ******* ****, paid $5,000 through a debit card to Syvan to tutor my 8 year old son. Well within a week of this transaction I ask to cancel this with full refund. It has been about three months now and I have not received any refund. My child has not participate in any tutoring session.Business response

Business Response /* (1000, 10, 2022/09/15) */ This is the first time we have received a request from BBB on this case. A full refund was issued to this family last month. They had requested a refund from a previous employee who never processed it. They requested the refund again last month. Immediately after the refund was requested, they disputed the amount through the bank and we accepted the dispute and they were paid through the bank.
