I would give this “rescue” 0 stars if it were an option. A dog was brought to our home one afternoon for us to meet him. I took him back to the rescue representative who waited in her car while we spent time with him to set up a second meet/possible foster. At that time we were told that they assumed we were keeping the dog that day if we liked him. We did like him, however, he had very little time to interact with our three dogs already in the home. We did keep him that day and fought hard to keep him here with us permanently. This dog had been severely neglected and had received very poor veterinary care prior to us taking him in. Skin breakdown, pressure sores, ear infections, staples in a leg wound from a surgery nearly 2 weeks prior, and a mouth with very few good teeth and quite a few rotted teeth that will have to be extracted. When I described his condition to the owner of the rescue, she insisted that he be taken back to Texas for his dental extraction surgery. I refused. By the time he would be picked up to transport him from the Pacific North West to Texas he would have been with us for nearly 3 weeks. She felt it was best to put this poor dog through the trauma of pulling him out of a home where he was being loved, cared for, and finally starting to trust. He would then be stuck in a kennel, driven half way across the country, have surgery, then be put back in a kennel the next day and driven back. I highly doubt if I agreed I would ever see him again. According to the rescue, veterinary care is 1/4 of the price in Texas, but how could all the cost of transport, plus the surgery still be less than just letting him stay with his new family and get care here? Arguments ensued via text and phone for 3 days regarding the well being of the dog. The rescue owner refused any and all attempts I made to pay the adoption fee; I also said many times I would assume all financial responsibility for the dog going forward and that I would not like to the rescue for any help or reimbursement. Still she refused, even sending payments back! She insulted me, used profanity, and threatened me. She told me she had emailed fliers all across my city staying I had stolen the dog; if I brought him anywhere for care he would be taken away and the rescue would come for him. She even called the police on me, from half way across the country! Eventually we consulted a lawyer regarding our rights and who was actually the legitimate owner of the dog with consideration all things that had transpired since we took him in. After a thorough explanation, we were told we were the sole and rightful owners of the dog. A letter was sent to the rescue for the owner to cease and desist any further communication attempts, etc. We have adopted recipes before and have never had such a traumatic and hurtful experience as we did with this Texas Muttley Love “rescue” and its owner. A rescue for animals is supposed to find them good homes with people and other pets who will love them and care for them. This rescue refused to consider not only the dog’s physical well being, but his emotional and psychological well being as well.I am so glad we kept our dog that day, he will have the best life we can give him for the rest of his years.
