    Pattern of Complaint:

    Beginning in May 2012 and up to present day, the BBB Houston has received multiple complaints and customer reviews that exhibit the following patterns.  

    Consumers have alleged that they are treated in a rude manner when information has been requested regarding the return policy and locating items in the store. Houston Garden Center has a "No Refund" policy.  

    In a recent 2020 customer review, the consumer alleged she was told by an onsite manager, the owners do not care about customer service because for the number of stores and volume of business. 

    Unfortunately, while the company does run ads in the Houston Chronicle, they do not answer consumer's complaints or customer reviews.

    A recent customer review from 4/2021, when a customer stated the actual store was nothing like the TV commercial, the employee was quoted as telling her, "..the commercial didn't mention anything about service."

    In Texas, a company does not have to post a policy where it’s visible to the public.  Please make sure you inquire about the company’s policy before you purchase anything. 

    Consumers also allege while employees will recommend a product to use on plants, when consumer’s verify, they are finding that recommended product doesn’t work with the type of plants they have. The company is unwilling to accept the return.

    In a recent January 2023 complaint, consumer stated they selected a tree with a 70% off sign. The cashier stated the system no longer gave the 70% discount. The manger gave him the corporate number. When he called, they told him the sale ended at midnight the night before. He stated they marque and the individual signs still showed 70%off. They refused to give him the advertised discount. When he stated he would tell all his friends about the experience, they said, “you just do that.”

      Went there twice to purchase plants. 10/2/22 and 10/22/22. Within less than 2 months, the four 8 inch mums, four 1 quart calendulas and 1 red sisters are dead!!!!! I watered them daily. Obviously their quality ********* I should get my $60 back.

      I was hung up on twice told the manager would call me back. Second call told no manager available. 2 of the 3 topiaries died. I went to replace the two dead ones. Showed a picture of the living one. Was sold two of the wrong

      Made a couple of purchases at Houston Garden Center that qualified for the sales tax exemption per Texas Administrative Code Titles 34 Part 1 Chapter 3 Subchapter O Rule $3.369 but was charged sales tax. I brought this to their attention at the time of purchase and was told to contact Matt ****** at (713) 218-0860 to request a refund. I attempted to contact Mr. ****** but was denied several times and finally told that Mr. ****** would not be contacting me nor issuing a refund. I requested Mr. ****** then sign a form required by the Texas Comptroller's office so atht I could request a refund directly from the Comptroller and was also denied. I imagine all purchases made over the Memorial Day Weekend at any Houston Garden Center would have qualified for this sales tax exemption so many people were impacted by the conduct of this business and the violation of this rule. I am seeking refund of my sales tax in the amount of $16.41.

      The loader of my mulch dumped it into my trunk and split the bags open with his carelessness not only do I have to try to take it back to a store that says all sales are final but I also had to clean out my car he was an attentive. Additionally the clerk who rang me up told me to show the receipt to the guy in the booth and when I stopped to show him he said to me “what are you showing that to me for, I don’t load“.

      Houston Garden Center in sugarland, TX has a 1/2 half sign in front of plants. During checkout I was advised the plants were not half off. I should them the sign and they said no discount. I called the headquarters and the lady advised me they would not honor the sign. I have pictures.
