This is regarding an apartment complex: ***** **** ***** ***** ***** ***** ******** ** ***** My mom and I lived there for about 15 years, and while it wasn’t ***** **** when we first moved in, we called that apartment complex home. Last year, we decided to make a big decision to move. The apartment management company and office staff had changed so many times, that our apartment necessities had become less and less important to the office staff. Years went by without things being fixed, the community itself became a danger. Murders, robberies, and other questionable behavior became more frequent. We didn’t feel safe living in those apartments. Long story short, after we moved, months went by and I received a collection letter from the property. They had our phone numbers and emails and NOT ONCE did they contact us to let us know we owed anything. We moved out in June. The letter was received in November. No one contacted us, and the receipt of “damages” doesn’t include the security deposit my mother put down 15 years ago. My fear is that because they changed management companies so often, maybe some paperwork was lost in the process. We have tried to contact the apartments and each time we get someone named Shana, and she is never helpful. We were treated so poorly in the past, and it’s a shame. They neglected to fix anything we asked them to fix over the years, and months after we move out, they’re billing us for it. Of course the apartment wouldn’t look perfect after 15 years. My mother was a single parent with 2 children, and worked constantly. Yet, she was never late on a payment and she never missed a payment. Never in 14 years. Now this is on my credit report, and it directly affects anywhere else we want to live. I don’t believe the receipt is accurate. It doesn’t show our deposit going towards repairs, and other information is incorrect. We want to do the right thing, even though they didn’t.Business response

Taking into consideration the longevity and past payment history of the resident, we have adjusted off everything except the following charges:
$60.00 standard cleaning fee
$20.00 trash out expense for removal of items that remained in the unit
$96.70 final utility and pest control costs (5/1/21 – 6/30/21)
The adjusted amount now due is $176.70. Regarding the claim of a security deposit, we were not credited with a security deposit upon takeover of the property from previous management/ownership. Therefore, we have no security deposit on behalf of this resident. Unfortunately, that issue will have to be handled directly between the resident and prior management.
