I attempted to sign-up online for electricity service with ENERGY TEXAS. Upon completion of filling in all information and submitting form it advised that I would have to pay a $500 deposit. I have never had to pay a deposit to any of my electricity providers in the 15 years I have lived alone. I called the company to question this deposit and gain some understanding. I was asked if this was the first time I attempted to apply for electricity service. Yes, I replied. Although, i can't be sure as i previously did do some research a few weeks back on electricity providers. I was also advised that the information sent over was marked "fraudulent" not sure why. So, I was asked to send in a copy of my drivers' license (makes sense) and my LEASE/MORTGAGE agreement. I own a home and was not about to send over my agreement for my MORTGAGE. That is very invasive and how people can be scammed or have their identity stolen or credit stolen. When i asked if there was another way to confirm my identity. Which there are many. I even asked if they can confirm if i give them my current electricity provider information with account number and ESI ID. That was not acceptable for this company. I'm a little concerned about their practices and ask that they re-evaluate how they identify customers regarding fraud. I immediately hung up after I was asked for this information again. I have recent seen an uptick in fraudulent and scamming activities regarding my own accounts and feel this is a poor way to identify someone. I do not wish to do business with this company as I feel this process is dangerous and not sure what else they would require of me in the future if I was a customer. Just want them to change their identification process asap to something else. IDEAS: verify current electricity provider info, social security# already given so drivers' license copy with person holding DL card in picture, sending a code to cell phone to confirm or sending code to email to confirm.
