Last year, we had this company out to give us a bid on a deck. We talked about what it might look like, and then we were told we needed to sign a few things to get the design process started. One of the things was the creation of some type of loan to cover the cost, and were repeatedly told that if things didn't work out, it wouldn't cost us anything and the loan would just disappear. A week or two later, we were told we needed to transfer a money from the loan to this company as a down payment on the work, before we'd even seen the plans. We did so, trusting them, but a little shocked at the price tag ($20k). When the plans were ready, they came back to show us. They were far more ornate than anything we had described, and the price tag was way beyond what we were expecting. We asked them to tone it down. They came back a few days later with a toned-down version, but the price tag was still insane. We turned down the project and again were told that we'd be fully refunded. It turns out, that although we were on a promotional, no-interest deal, that the interest had been accruing, and we got a call stating that they were going to refund most of the initial payment, but they typically kept some to cover the cost of the architectural renderings. We still are listed as owing $2k, and the only thing that they produced were a couple of conceptual images that were never even given to us, just showed to us. Meanwhile, if we don't pay off that $2k before the promotional time period is up, we'll owe an extra $1,200 interest that was generated while they held the $20k that was never used. To ask for $2k to cover a couple of renderings is insane, and then to generate over a thousand dollars in interest for nothing is beyond comprehension, especially considering that we were told multiple times that it wouldn't end up costing us anything. We'd like the balance eliminated, or at least SEVERELY reduced.
