I came to the Avenues Hostel with a reservation on the evening of 2/28/23. Immediately upon arrival, I was struck by how rude and angry the desk clerk Travis seemed to be about my check-in. He seemed to grow worse when he heard me speaking Spanish to another person in the hostel. He was also angry and dismissive with another person with whom I was traveling. Because I travel often, I did not respond to his intimidation but backed down to do what he wanted. I went to sleep there at a normal hour. In addition to other hostel staff discussing what sounded like illegal drugs, there was also another person who came into my room in the middle of the night and went through my luggage. In the middle of the night, I woke up to use the bathroom. When I left my room, Travis emerged from another room on the hall and began to yell at me about not having shoes in the hallway. He also told me I was breaking rules that had not been given to us at check-in and were not posted anywhere in the facility. When I asked him about these "rules," he told me that he could kick me out and refuse service to me for any reason. He also told me that they were not going to take my money the next day for the room if they kicked me out. When I continued to press him about these rules and why the hostel did not post them publically, he told me "that I needed to ask other people first." When I asked him to put it in writing that he was going to kick me out as a paying customer, he told me that he would not. He got other people to come menace and intimidate me to get my luggage and leave the hostel. He never contacted me or gave me anything in writing after kicking me out in the middle of the night. The only reason that I left was because I was going to take the money and go stay somewhere else. I want a refund of the charges and an explanation for why the staff were discriminatory and intimidating to me while traveling.
