I filed a claim with American Home Shield and they sent this company out. The next day I get a notice from AHS that my claim was partially approved as the Refrigerant wasnt covered under my plan, they only pay $10 per pound (I have the Gold Plan). The tech reported that I needed 12 lbs of Refrigerant for a 3 Ton AC unit for a price of $2100. Another uncovered charge was for a locking cap for $275 (mind you, my home was built in 2020 so my unit is going on 4 years old in Nov). Not knowing anything about HVAC, it still didnt seem right so I start googling how many pounds of refrigerant is needed for a 3 ton AC unit (about 5-6 lbs if empty). I also googled the price of refrigerant and I found 15lbs for $317. I ended up calling another company for a 2nd opinion and this time I stood outside and asked questions as he went along. The first question I asked was about our refrigerant levels. The new tech checked the pressure and said levels are good and we dont need anymore. When I told him we were quoted for 12lbs, he said yeah they were trying to get over on you bc even if you were bone dry, your unit wouldn't hold 12lbs. Then I asked about the locking cap. He showed me what my locking cap looked like and said theres nothing wrong with it. He did say there is a newer model locking cap but I works for both models, the only difference is the newer model is red. It literally made me sick to my stomach at how evil people can be. The tech from KJs Heating and Air stepped inside my home and could feel the 90 degree temperature and how hot it was inside my home. He saw that we have small children and a dog. Its sickening to know that our AC could have been fixed that same day or even the next day with no money out of pocket bc AHS would have covered it had it not been for the added expenses for the refrigerant and the locking cap, both of which were confirmed that we did not need. The actual problem was the compressor, which is covered under my warranty plan.
