On March 24, 2022, ******** ***, my 84-yr old sister, went to the ********** ** office of Jefferson Surgical to be seen by Dr. **** *******, being referred by her primary care doctor for kidney stones. I am my sister's POA and I live near Atlanta, GA, so I must coordinate her care from a distance. I called the office days earlier and spoke with his assistant ******* to be sure all the needed charts had been received, where to send the forms I had completed for my sister, and explain that I would be remotely attending the session by phone as I had done for nearly ten years with many medical providers in the Valley. I ended the call with the understanding I would fax her forms and ensure the sonogram report was sent from the referring office. We were good to go. I coordinated transportation for my sister and when she arrived, Dr. ******* refused to see her unless I was physically present, which was an impossibility. On the phone, ******* claimed to have explained that requirement to me when we talked, but that is simply not the case. She did say that someone would need to be with her, and that need was satisfied, I believed, by her escort who would be present. If there were issues that resulted from the visit, the escort could attest to what was said or done. So any liability concerns would have been mitigated. At no time did ******* make clear to me prior to today that I must physically attend my sister's appointment. Had she done so, I would have cancelled and gone elsewhere. I spoke to the manager who investigated and determined it was Dr. ********* policy. I was not allowed to speak to Dr. *******. I have reviewed the paperwork provided and nowhere does it state this policy, which I know to be an anomaly in the Valley, based on ten years experience. Letting such an unadvertised and unique policy stand between a doctor and an elderly woman in pain speaks volumes about this practice relative to others in the Valley.
