I contacted Chimneys Done Wright (Shannon Wright) in late June 2024 for the purpose of getting a bid on chimney repairs. I already had two bids for the repairs and wanted a third. I told Mr. Wright what repairs I needed, namely re-pointing/repair of chimney masonry, insertion of two stainless steel chimney liners, and installation of a wood-burning fireplace insert. Mr. Wright insisted he could not give a bid without doing an inspection and that the inspection would cost $150. Since I anticipated the repairs would cost over $10,000.00, I decided it might be worth it to pay for the inspection/bid. Mr. Wright's policy of requiring a paid inspection in order to give a bid on the work was in alignment with ***** ***** *******, another company I considered getting a bid from. Mr Wright inspected the chimney on July 3, 2024 and I paid the $150.00. He provided the bid for the work on July 9, 2024. (see attached documents). When I searched the Virginia DPOR database I discovered that Chimneys Done Wright was not licensed as required by law. This meant I could not get a permit which would help me ensure the repairs comply with all applicable code provisions. Mr. Wright was wrong in charging me for a bid on construction work he cannot legally undertake without a contractor's license. Mr. Wright should refund the $150.00 I paid for the "inspection" required to get the bid. In searching for a contractor to do my chimney repairs, I relied heavily on BBB's website. I noted that ****** ******* and ******* ******* both had an "F" rating for not being licensed. I incorrectly assumed that the A+ rating for Chimneys Done Wright meant it was properly licensed. Hopefully the BBB listing for Chimneys Done Wright can be adjusted to reflect that the business is not licensed to do the repair work it shows on its website (*********************************************************).
