We have used Citizen K9 Dog Training since 2017 for boarding and training our dogs. I cannot say enough that truly reflects our gratitude in how Brandy helped restore the joy of owning a dog in our home. Initially, we sought out Brandy to help train/retrain our high energy herding dog (this was our fifth dog of this breed) and retrain we humans. As life has taught us, what works for one pet does not necessarily work for all. We were at our wits end by the time we found Brandy and she not only helped with the "how" to train, but more importantly the "why." And the more dogs we own, the more we realize how much more we have to learn about dogs and their behavior. After the formal training ended, we continued to use Citizen K9 to board both our dogs. We knew the older dog, who was 13 yo at the time and would become a "nervous ninny" when boarded, would get the gentle care she needed and the young one would get the daily exercise and training she needed. We always felt and continue to feel confident in leaving our dogs under her care. Today, we have another puppy and we continue to use Citizen K9 for training and boarding despite the drive to Norfolk. We don't live or work in the area, so the additional 25-minute drive each way and money spent on gas reflects how much we value her services. The facility is clean and the staff is always pleasant and forthright. If you are in need of training and/or boarding, we highly recommend Brandy and the services she offers!

I boarded my two dogs Brownie Bio & Luigi at citizen K9 for 5 days & I can say that I was extremely satisfied with everything. The facility is clean & the staff is very nice. My partner & I discussed with the staff, that we were working on their litter dependency. The staff helped come up with a plan to keep them separated but also give them some yard time together. We received pics & updates so we knew how well they were doing. We really appreciated everything & do plan to board again. Citizen K9 also invited me & my dogs to their Easter Egg event. I brought my dog Jewel & she had a blast! They had agility things put up, the owner even set up a little Easter photo booth inside the building,. There was even a raffle where we won a free day training class! We have already booked for Friday. If you're looking for a safe & fun place to take your pups I would highly recommend. They do events all the time & the staff really takes good care of you & your dog.

Everyone at Citizen K9 is fantastic, but I specifically want to highlight Brandy for her amazing work with our reactive dog. I adopted our dog in my early 20s when he was about 4-5 months old, and he was my first dog so I was clueless on how to properly raise a dog, let alone a high-energy herding dog who was extremely anxious. After he was attacked by another dog on a walk, he developed a severe reactivity to dogs and eventually, also to people.

In the past (almost) 10 years together, my dog and I have tried 4 different trainers using all of the common training methods. The trainer I worked with the longest used the popular "balanced training" methods, which include using a prong collar for sharp corrections of "unwanted" behaviors. I was very ignorant of the way this method can affect a dog over time, especially an anxious one like my own boy. His reactivity never improved.

I moved away from that area and found another "balanced" trainer, yet again with no improvement to his reactivity. I began to think my dog would never improve. Then one day, I was looking for another trainer and I found Citizen K9's website. I called and the woman at the front desk was so kind and patient with my questions. I decided to give them a try, and I am so so thankful I did!

Over the past few months working with Brandy and her team, my boy has improved SO much! His confidence level is growing, and his anxiety is calming down to the point where we can almost always walk past other dogs with little to no reaction. My boyfriend and I are learning (and unlearning!) so much at the group classes, and personally I am becoming less anxious as well. I wish I could have worked with ****** from the start. It is abundantly clear that she is an expert at training, and I love that she does not use aversive methods. Our dog loves her, and it's obvious she loves him too. She can work with any dog, but it's the owners that need the most training! You will learn so much, and your dog will thank you!

I send my German Shepherd here about 3 times a week for puppy socializing, and just recently left her for boarding for about 6 nights while I went away. I LOVE everything about this place. Highly recommend. The staff and trainers are absolutely amazing and work well with my dog. I've notice a huge improvement in her behavior and she always gets so excited to go see all her friends! We couldn't be happier with Citizen K9. We have used multiple services from them including inboard training, overnight boarding and daily enrichment classes. Our dog is better trained and we as pet owners are better trained because of our work with Citizen K9. It is fun to watch and learn from them on how to work with our dog. The staff has provided us great service and given our dog so much attention and love that she gets excited for her enrichment days at Citizen K9. We were excited when they moved closer to our home in Norfolk. It has been great to see how much their business has grown over this short period of time since they opened on Granby Street. We look forward to continuing our long term relationship with them. Brandy and her team have done an amazing job and we are glad they are part of our life.

I was so hesitant to take our 5 month old puppy for daycare or training, but with 2 young kids we really needed help getting a jump start on her training. I talked with the front office staff the first time I called inquiring about services they provided and she was incredibly helpful in answering my questions. And when I requested to talk directly to the trainer to answer my other questions, she promptly called me back later that day. When I asked if I could tour the facility they said absolutely stop on by anytime. Which I think tells you a lot right there about the kind of care you can expect your dog to receive. When I toured K9 citizen in Norfolk a few days later I was impressed by how clean their facilities were and by how they carefully select which dogs are allowed to interact with each other after evaluating their behaviors. After touring and more questions answered, we decided to purchase a package of the day training sessions. I am truly amazed by how much our puppy learned in only 2-3 sessions! Seriously, it's incredible. She went from being a crazy and wild girl with no manners, lots of jumping and mouthing to learning to sit, lay, and stay (albeit briefly) in only 2-3days! I was so impressed that I bought another package to see what other magic Brandy and her team could do. And it's also important to note that our puppy LOVES going there which says alot about how she is treated. She gets so excited to go to K9 citizen and the videos and pictures that they send clearly show that (the water splash pad is a favorite!). She is always happy when I pick her up at the end of the day. I would absolutely recommend k9 citizen to anyone who is looking for a dog trainer. I know we will continue to use them for doggie daycare even after our second day training package is done.

First and LAST visit! My first impression consisted of a poorly kept facility. The front staff lacked basic intrapersonal skills and proper dog etiquette. One employee began interacting with my dog without even asking. A dog (crated behind the desk) in the office was acting poorly and not being corrected in any manner. The owner was very condescending and hateful (to say the least). If you are searching for a dog training, then keep looking.

Citizen K9 Dog Training & Agility Response

      05/17/2022

This client came in ONLY for a *** test no training ever done with either of them. He came in at a time we were busy and dealing with multiple clients and phone calls. The dog behind the desk is one that if the client would have asked is one that had a spay surgery. The owner had his dog on a pinch collar. My only 2 comments to this owner upon seeing this is ONE. you cant have a pinch collar on for the test- NOT my rules that is *** *** rules which I will add at the end of this. SECOND thing I stated was have you read the requirements for the **** Which if he had, he would have known he was not allowed to have such equipment on.

We had a client that was checking out and very busy in the front desk. We are a training facility and as such we have dogs come in all the time and if my employee had not greeted them, we would be accused of being rude. As it was this dog was jumping on everyone in the facility. and jumped on my employee when he went to pass ** in which case the employee started interacting to keep the dog from jumping on clients etc. When we asked the client to move his dog into another door way, he had to put the pinch collar back on the dog and proceeded to pull the dog into a down and then stood on the leash and collar so the dog could not get up. Once we got the other client out, he then stated he was not sure why his dog was not behaving and decided to exit the building. I only said 2 things to this client both were in regards to one the equipment which is not allowed and 2. asked if he had read the requirements which he had stated he had. Obviously he had not as he would have known that was not a piece of equipment allowed for testing. The dog based on observation would not have passed * CGC test as the dog was out of control jumping etc and could not even stay in a down stay without the owner standing on the prong collar and leash to keep it in that position. The dog had been jumping on several people +/*-including other clients in the waiting area. Just based on the corrections he could have been dismissed from taking test.
As for our facility, this person was only in our front desk area and was in no other area of our facility so is unaware how our facility is kept. We have an open door policy for people to come in and walk through our facility. Very few facilities have that. So to say we have a poorly kept facility he is basing off just standing at our front desk.
The owner was clearly embarrassed by his dogs behavior and remarked on that prior to leaving that he had no idea why his dog was being so ill behaved. The dog clearly would not have passed * CGC test and the owner is taking it out on our facility due to his own dogs behavior and his being uninformed on the *** CGC rules. The *** CGC rules are stated below which as an evaluator i follow.

CGC RULES: All tests must be performed on leash. Dogs should wear well-fitting buckle or slip collars
(including martingales) made of leather or fabric. They may also wear body harnesses for the
CGC test. Body harnesses should not restrict the movement of the dog. Special training
equipment such as pinch collars, electronic collars, and head collars are not permitted. The
leash should be made of either leather or fabric. Retractable leashes may not be used in the
CGC test. The evaluator should have available a 20-ft. line for Test #6.
We recognize that special training collars may be valuable equipment in the beginning stages of
dog training, however, we feel that dogs are ready to be tested after they have been
transitioned to a slip or buckle collar, or body harness. If an evaluator is teaching classes and
does not feel comfortable with one of the *** permitted collars, students may be required to
take the test in the type of collar used in class (as long as it is permitted by *** for testing). If
the CGC test is advertised for the general public, all of the permitted collar types and body
harnesses should be allowed in the test.

      Corrections
The ****** is a program that encourages owners to have fun with their
dogs. Harsh corrections are not permitted in the test and are grounds for dismissal.

Dogs who pass *** CGC test should be under good control and be safe around people and other
dogs. The purpose of the CGC Program is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can
be a respected member of the community because it has been trained to be well behaved in
the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs.
He had already shown up with prong collar and excessive correction as well, the dog did not behave around anyone and was jumping on everyone- why we had him move to a different location while we checked out clients.

I have never seen someone so aggressive, rude, unprofessional, and quite frankly, a bully. I sent my dog there for in board training (court cases were pending) for reactive behavior. First off, she tried to make a deal with the commonwealth attorney to take my dog and give him to her. Then when making any kind of comment questioning her methods, she aggressively attacks/bullies you on a public ******** page, accuses you of abusing your dog, and shares media content of your dog. Horrible human being. I've filed a complaint with the BBB and am looking in to legal action

Citizen K9 Dog Training & Agility Response

      04/18/2022

This person has tried all kinds of things. The dog was court ordered into our facility not for reactive behavior but for BITING He has a history of attacks on several people and in several cities. I was subpoenaed for the court case for the defense. The dog was in our facility for the month until the court hearing. As part of our intake process they are required to accept and sign a contract. Within the contract it states. "I hereby consent to my dog being the subject of the photographs and/ or audiovisual recordings and authorize Citizen K9 Dog Training LLC and Brandy *******......" That contract was signed and will not allow the owner to continue until is is agreed to.
They created the aggression/biting issue and we fixed the issue. There is court record of all that transpired in court available for review for all to see. . The dog is working dog and they are unable to control the dog. It was offered if they signed over the dog the charges could be possibly changed. It was stated by owner he would euthanize the dog before signing over to anyone. They then tried to file fraud charges saying their card was fraudulently used. We gave the credit card company the camera video of the owner/this woman to the company showing her swiping her card at our front desk.
She then posted a rather nasty comment on our ******** in regards to a video and training where we do NOT use e collars and proceeded to bash our training. Meanwhile posting a video of them in a lowes with the dog wearing a basket muzzle, wearing an e collar and also having a prong collar. I simply stated that they created the issue with their lack of knowledge and she as well stated they had the dog under control. I stated that they did not have the dog under control with all of that equipment on and that it would be a different story with all the equipment off. She as well accused us of beating and starving her dog. So we posted a couple of videos showing the dog on a regular collar doing obedience as well as some play etc. contradicting her accusations in the post. I then went on to say that in the same scenario as the video she posted that I would only have need of a regular collar and not all the equipment they had on. I also offered that the money that they owed us to bet if they pulled all the equipment off the dog that there would be a difference in how that dog behaved. I then ended with the ** you still owe money for having to attend and come to the dangerous dog case on this dog that was found dangerous prior to my testimony in court based on other victims who had been attacked. The boyfriend of Valerie stated in court and on court record during the testimony that he could not break up a dog fight with one of the 2 dogs muzzled so shot his other dog without the muzzle to stop the fight. Based on all the testimony prior to my being called up they made the ruling on the dog. My last comment on the post she started was that it would be nice if she took care of her bill since I was subpoenaed for an expert witness on dog behavior and the dog was court ordered into our facility. I am happy to show any and all documentation as to the transaction as well as screenshots from the ******** post before she removed the post. I am happy to go to court over this if that is what they would like to do. As we have all our documentation supporting all the above and then some. This client waited until over 4 months later when they have other court cases pending to leave this review and post video etc on the ******** page.
