On Wednesday january 19th around noon on a clear day i had a vehicle towed on a flat bed 7.2 miles. I wanted it towed to my house 5 miles away but the tow truck driver said it was going to be cheaper (around 100$ according to their driver "*************************") to have it towed back to their shop. I attempted the same day to pay and pickup the vehicle but they refused and wanted to evaluate the damage first as a measure of good will. Next day they said they didnt get to it, friday they quoted 3800$ to repair. I said i need to talk to my girlfriend about it and would call them the next day. Sat and Sunday they are closed, no phone calls. Monday i go in and they said its 700$+ ****. 69 $ service charge, 2 hours labor but the tow took barely 20 minutes. 250$ for the tow 7 miles. Heres the kicker, 30$ a day storage charge they mentioned NOTHING about until monday, all said close to 800$ ****. They said sign the car over to them or pay the ****. The state police said to get an attorney. I believe they intentionally lied about the tow fee initially to reroute it to their shop, intentionally did not disclose the storage fee and slow-rolled the whole process in order to rack up an unpayable ****, with the intention to take title possession through an abandoned vehicle claim. They said it took a day to wait on a parts quote (which they charged 30$ storage for that day) and charge storage on weekends citing business days that they are not even open. They told me they do not need to disclose how much they charge for service or disclose any fees that i would incur. How, or is this even legal? How can a company lie about a verbal tow price and then not disclose a daily reoccurring fee while charging you storage fees for days they were unavailable? Local flat bed rates are 75$ under 10 miles.

      Business response

in response to the complaint, we have never spoken to this person filing the complaint until the 24th of January when he came to our facility and tried to tell us how much he was paying for this" tow". We have been dealing with the lady who was driving the car and her mother. This issue was on January 18, 2022 not the 19th.  It was the day after a major snow storm, roads were snow covered and the driver of the car went off the road and hit a rock.  This was not a "tow" from point A to point B. This was a winch out of the ditch with accident damage. Our drivers do not quote prices roadside so our driver did not tell him it would be cheaper to tow to our shop.  When the damage to the car was discovered our driver said we are a repair shop also and we could give them a price for the repairs.  We have been in the business for 19 years and have had the same process for that many years.  If the repairs would have been done here we would wave the storage fees.  All tow companies charge a storage fee, this is not something we made up ourselves.  Our fees are standard towing rates in our area.

      Customer response

      01/25/2022

The tow was on the 18th, my apology. I have call logs on my phone calling before Monday the 24th, i spoke with whom i assume to be the mechanic who looked at the car during the week. The lack of communication between staff did not help this issue. I came into the facility after my Wife was told her **** was 825$. Immediately after asking about the balance the owners comment was "the **** includes the tow out of the facility, she (my Wife) said her boyfriend wants to play little mechanic." This is not how you interact with customers immediately after meeting them. The entire interaction was condescending and rude from the beginning. The tow was after a major snowstorm, but the roads were not covered in snow. I commute on the same road and had driven on 2 hours prior to the accident. My wife is not an experienced winter driver. The car was resting less than ********************************************************* a guard rail. The front left corner of the cars fender and bumper are damaged. I have both text messages with timestamps showing that the tow did not take 2 hours to complete, upon arriving and departing at the scene the driver was out of the truck for no more than 30 minutes. "*************************" (the driver) is known to us and said "it would be cheaper to go to swanton because delivering the car to highgate would otherwise be 100 something dollars". The business policy of not having drivers quote prices may be a current policy, but if employees do not follow this policy it is a moot point. I live 5 miles from the accident and would never have agreed to have it towed to swanton and to pay a 30$ a day storage fee if this had been mentioned, or if the driver did not say it would be MORE expensive to dump it in highgate. We called to pick the car up the same day after getting salvage quotes, and the business insisted that they wanted to look at the car first and said "dont worry about the **** right now". I am directly quoting an employee on the phone here. The following day (perhaps the day after that) they said they hadnt put together a quote for us. I was later told it took a day because they were "ordering parts". After which they hastily corrected themselves and said "waiting on parts prices". Mind you this is 30$ a day storage fee still being added to the **** that no one at at point mentioned. The repairs were 3800$ quoted and the car books for a fraction of that. Having them repair the car to wipe out the **** does not make economic sense. Townline auto and Jamies automotive both charge less than 100$ for tows under 10 miles, and Jamies automotive which is less than a mile away from *** does not charge for storage; i have worked with them for many years. The 250$ tow fee is not an area standard, and the tow was not a complicated tow. The storage fee was not mentioned by the driver, mechanic, or the owner at any part of this process and the process of getting the damaged quoted was was dragged out. The business is not available on weekends or for phone calls but include storage fees which again we were never informed of.

My issues here are the driver providing misinformation, blatantly lying to a hysterical women who just got into her first wreck with her two year old in the backseat, over double the areas local towing price, the omission of fees charged by the company, the lack of communication between employees, the what i believe to be intentional misdirection to having the car towed to the *** shop instead of bringing it home, and the immediate rude behavior upon walking in the door. How can you charge for a service that a customer did not ask for, agree to, or was informed that they were receiving? We wanted the car brought home and were misdirected in order for the business to rack up these hidden storage fees. This is misleading, fraudulent, and predatory business practice. I offered to pay the local towing rate and labor for diagnosis and they refused and said its 700 something dollars or we are taking title ownership via abandoned vehicle claim.

By being in business for 19 years you learn ******s, and one ****** is to learn when to cut your losses and not waste your time with certain people and experiences.  TDI has not been in business for so many years by running a business badly.  So taking that into consideration we have better things to do with our time and energy than fight with a keyboard warrior.

You have until Thursday 1/27/22 at 2:00 pm to remove your car from our property at no charge.  If you do not remove by this time all charges will stand.
