On Friday, Oct. 21, I brought a brand-new 14k gold herringbone necklace to Joseph Jewelry in ********, ** to verify the gold content. I was prepared to pay but they didn't charge me. I also brought an antique necklace for extensive repairs & a pair of earrings for re-plating. The sales clerk took my necklace out of its pouch, in which it had been lying flat, & curled it into a messy figure-8 onto her tray; she pressed the necklace in place w/ her ****************** & took it to the back. She made 2 trips to the back & carried the necklace this way twice.I made a mental note to check the necklace, which had been flawless, before leaving, but forgot; discussing the antique necklace took around 3 hours. When I got home I checked the necklace & noticed a small bend near the clasp, where she had been holding it. I left a message at the business; no one called me back the next day. I called the next day anyway & the clerk said I had no way to prove what I said & was very rude. I went by that same day (Sat., Oct. 22) & spoke w/ the woman who damaged my necklace. ********* colleague handled the necklace & swore they couldn't feel damage (shocking).I spoke w/ the manager on the phone Tues., Oct. 25. He said herringbone necklaces are HARD TO DAMAGE. ****** herringbone necklaces - they are SO easy to damage! I met him Wed., Oct. 26 & begged him a dozen times to watch the store footage w/ me to see how she handled the necklace. He refused. He handled the necklace & said he felt no damage! I said if he thought the necklace was brand-new, why not replace it then? He refused. He said he would change store policy so no employee would handle pieces w/o the customer present. Why change policy if nothing wrong happened here?? I begged him to teach employees to handle herringbones carefully b/c I was worried they would do this again but he refused even this!I called the police but they said it was a civil matter, so please don't tell people to call the police b/c they're useless.
