In August, 2021, we asked H&R for an estimate for inspecting our septic tank at ********************************* August 18, I was billed $225.00 for septic tank inspection. Our septic tank was not inspected. This amount was charged us for the estimate for inspection. We were not told there was a charge for the estimate and would not have ordered an estimate for that rate, indeed, we had already declined an estimate for a lower rate.In the midst of getting an inspection so we could complete the sale of our home, wrapping up loose ends and moving to our current address, we challenged the charge by email and phone without any response, except to be sent a new invoice with a late charge that brought our **** to $287.01, with tax. Making preparations for a trip and unable to engage anyone at the company, we paid half of the billed amount. In reply, H&R sent us another invoice, still dated 8/18/2021, crediting us for a payment of $143.50 and stating a balance due of $143.51..My wife and I feel we were unjustly charged for the estimate and the company was wrong to list the work as "inspection." We made what we consider a generous payment under the circumstances. Now we fear they will sell the **** for collection and we will be without recourse with a growing balance.Business response

Good Morning,
H&R Complete **** was hired by **************** to conduct an inspection on him some for a pending home sale on August 18, 2021. Upon inspection it was found that the existing poly tank lid was collapsed and deformed. **************** was standing by watching this being done and had a conversation with our service tech *****, about how to repair it. It was discussed that at this time we can not certify the septic tank for home sale due to the pre existing damage. An estimate was generated and presented to **************** 5 days later. Both the invoice and the proposal were emailed to **************** on 8/23/2021 @ 7:33am.We feel that we completed the job that we were hired for, a home sale inspection and that the amount due in owing is valid. The amount that **************** was charged is our minimum standard amount for a home sale/ septic system inspection. The amount due in owing is $143.51.

H&R Complete states the company was hired by me to inspect my septic tank. That is the basis of my dispute with the company. We did not hire them. Fully aware the tank could not pass a home sale inspection, we inquired about getting an estimate for replacement. There was never any indication of a fee or charge for such an estimate. We had been told by other companies doing remodeling that they were required to inform us if there was a charge for an estimate.
We had been told by a pumping specialist that our tank could not be certified and we needed an estimate for tank replacement. That company pumped the tank the following day to meet our requirements for sale of our house.
We were shocked, then, to be billed for the H&R estimate. We had not hired H&R. We did not feel compelled to pay what we considered an unreasonable amount for an estimate since we had not been advised of any charge.
Early this year, we paid half of the bill after H&R threatened to turn it over to collection. The charge for the estimate is over 10% of our monthly income. We were never warned, and never would have agreed to pay that amount for an estimate.
