Did not have a legitimate reason for keeping my 800 dollars security deposit. Send me to collections for 42 dollars pictures was taken of apartment before moving out.Review from Michelle D.

I'll begin by saying I am planning to take Tarragon to small claims court as soon as I move out of my unit. I've lived in some questionable places, doing questionable business dealings that negatively impact residents. But this company is by far the worst one I've encountered. They have positioned the woman who works in the leasing office as a catch-all for complaints and questions - even when things elevate beyond her expertise. I cannot get a manager above her to respond to me directly about my concerns. This company has attempted to give me less than 60 days notice for a 30%+ increase in my rent. They resent the notice to extend the dates appropriately, but I am convinced they only did so because I know my rights as a tenant and I can read the law. They are challenging my ability to read again by telling me I MUST hire a professional cleaning service to "sanitize" my unit before moving out. And I MUST provide receipts for this service to them, or face losing a portion (or all) of my security deposit. This is illegal - per the state law that is written very clearly regarding normal wear and tear. In addition to this issue, I am convinced that my utilities (handled by a third party company) are being overcharged and have been for the better part of 18 months now. I will absolutely be taking my concerns to small claims court and ensuring that I receive my full deposit as stated by the law as well as being refunded the money I was overcharged for utilities. They have done this to residents before (look up other reviews) and they will continue doing so until enough of us tenants stand up for ourselves. Please do your research and understand your rights as a renter! Don't let them steal your money and get away with it! They are banking on the fact that people won't take the time to go to small claims - don't prove them right!
