On July 19, 2021 we brought a used **** new holland tractor to Beaver Machines for engine repair. They were going to work to fix the issue with probably an engine rebuild. We called every 3 weeks or so to see how it is progressing and were told they were waiting on parts. We were never given an estimate and expected at some point they would supply us with an estimate since all work we ever get done with cars, lawn mowers, UTV and the like would always give an estimate. They finally told us the beginning of November it was done and when talked to them said it was $15,177 for the repair. I was dumbfounded at that price since the tractor is over 20 years old and to buy this tractor used would be around $10,500. The problem here is that we were never given an estimate and if we had known it was over 1/2 the value of the tractor we would have though heavily in buying a new one possibly smaller for $17,000 or similar for $26,000.I trusted them to do good and fair work at a reasonable industry price, and that they would tell me what it will cost after looking at the issue for a bit of time like all shops do that we have encountered but they did not do that. I have reasoned with them to show how we will be loosing money in the deal since it is more than the tractor is worth. They have reduced the amount by $1572 from the original cost. I believe the $7440 of in house labor is way to much to charge. Even if it is set at $100 per hour, that is 74 hours to do the rebuild and it should be done in 35 hours or so. Therefor i believe the labor is double what it should be and then they have some room for discounting it due to the huge mis-communication we both had.I even asked if he would give a good deal in buying a new tractor and trade in this one and still we are expected to pay trade-in + $4000 to buy new at an average price.I thought at the repair may cost upwards of $7500 but now with this dispute i would pay $9500 or give them it and call it even.Business response

Better Business Bureau:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
When i asked my son who dropped it off what he thought the repairs would cost he said $4000 to $6000 since a rebuild kit is usually below $1000. After hearing the **** amount i later investigated what an engine rebuild could cost and found $5000 to $7500 could be reasonable for that size tractor. Since the parts and external work is about $7000 on the ****, and estimating 40 hrs in house labor at $40/hour, which is easily more than cost, is $1600, i would be willing to pay $86000 total to be done with this issue. Also, since this tractor can easily sell for $10,500 at their store, i am willing to turn over the tractor as full payment to satisfy the ****. Again, if we had known how much Beaver was going to charge, we would have never attempted the repair and if we found no other options sold the tractor for parts at $2000 or at least left it out in the field to rust. Never did i think we would be charged 150 percent the value of the tractor to repair it.
I believe because of the poor communication on both parties, we should both have skin in the game. Even though we repeatedly called to check the status and asked for an update, never were we offered any idea of what was meant by "very expensive" from their original statement. We were not given any indication of costs, estimates, hours of work performed or anything related to what expense we were talking about. Even if Beaver could sell it for $10,500 with little work added, since all fluids are new along with a fully rebuilt engine, my ability to sell the tractor by private party would probably yield less which is why i see both above options of similar value to me but the 2nd option could supply $1500 more profit to Beaver. If i had to pay that much for the tractor, I will probably have to sell it to recoup the expenses and make due without one.
