On February 6th, I dropped my puppy off for a Puppy Boot Camp class training for two weeks. While my puppy was under the care of the facility for training, my puppys tail was injured. On the pick up date of February 20th, while at the facility I noticed his tail wasnt smooth like it normally is. I mentioned it to the trainer, but they said they didnt see a change in behavior of my puppy. When I got home, I examined his tail a little more by touching it, and he became aggressive, and whiny. I took him to Blue ********************* in ******, that evening and the vet said there wasnt a good percentage his tail was going to recover and suggested amputation. Monday, February 21st Blue ***** faxed over my puppys medical records to his primary vet, and they reached out to me in concerns about his tail and wanted to examine it right away. After examination, his tail is necrotic and has no chance to heal, but to be amputated. The owner of the facility has yet to own to up to the problem and has provided poor care for my puppy. I want to prevent this from happening to other dogs in their care. I believe the training facility where my puppy was injured at, is not up to standards of it being open due to lack of cleanliness and safety hazards.

******* showed no signs of a tail injury while in our care. He was a submissive dog and as such submissive dogs naturally carry and wag their tails low to their body. After reviewing the video footage from our facility we can see that the very first morning (6:35am) of training he comes out of his kennel with a low wagging tail. There was nothing about his actions that suggested we should look further into a problem with his tail. He had a good appetite, worked well for us in sits and downs. Dogs that have tail injury's are not willing to sit or down when asked to do so. There was nothing ****** obvious when looking at the tail to indicated to us that we should investigate further.  I have attached a photo taken of his tail on the day he was picked up. Other then a small dark spot which looks to us like dirt there was no indication of a problem. I have consulted his vet as well as my own and there are several theories as to what may have caused this ,one of which could be Vasculitis.

Vasculitis is a condition described by an inflammation of the wall of blood vessels. It can occur as a primary health problem, but in most cases, vasculitis happens secondary or as a complication of an underlying primary disease. Since it affects the endothelial wall of blood vessels, it can affect different parts and organ systems in a dogs body such as the gastrointestinal and integumentary (skin and hair) systems.

It could also have been something caught around the tail that constricted the blood flow. However you would most likely have seen the dog chewing at his tail which by the photos you can tell was not the case. This type of constriction takes more than 14 days to effect tissue.

Given the fact that ******* came to us with his tail held low we had no reason to think this was abnormal for him. There were also not enough other clues for us at the time to indicate that we should be checking for a problem with his tail.

Therefore I don't believe we were negligent in our care of ******* but in good faith will cover 1/2 of her vet expenses.
