Jay's Tree & Landscaping Services LLC was contracted to provide landscaping services in May 2021. In the original quote, for $1500 plus materials they were to: (1) Re-establish edges and refresh mulch areas visible (2) Remove lower three branches of a yellowwood tree (3) Remove encroaching viburnum on the fence and other shrubs (4) Remove the Canadian Serviceberry Their service schedule was delayed and this was exacerbated for our job because they had lost the ticket for the original quote (listed above) We were on an extended vacation and away from home through most of June and July. When they finally found the ticket and were able to get us on the schedule it was near the end of July. On 7/21 they came and worked and left us a voice mail that said they completed the job via the ticket. They texted pictures of the work but we were camping in a poor service area and could only download one of the pictures. Then, right away, they hammered us for payment. We received six texts and a voice mail within four hours demanding that we pay. We still had not seen all the pictures of the work that was done, but scrambled to pay them because, as they mentioned in the text, they had crew to pay and we didn’t want to hold that up. After we hit send on the payment, more of the pictures downloaded and we saw that only parts of the yard were included. We asked if the other areas had been mulched and received no answer. We got home a few days later on 7/24 and were shocked to see the mess that had been made. Two mature and healthy (20 year old) shrubs were removed, dozens of mature perennials were removed or covered in mulch, only about a quarter of the mulching was completed, and no edging was done. They used a dyed black mulch, where we had natural brown mulch in place. We actually had a pile of unused brown mulch on site. So a quarter of our mulch is now dyed black, and the rest natural brown. The Canadian Serviceberry we asked to be removed was still in place. The viburnum was not addressed at all. The yellowwood tree had been trimmed. We estimate over $300 worth of shrubs and perennials had been removed or damaged. When trying to work through the issue with the vendor, the owner was rude and cursed at us via text message. The final bill was $1650. We have lived here for over twenty years and there is no way that it costs $1500 in labor to throw $150 (or even $200 as he claims) worth of mulch. Though that labor price is reasonable for mulching and edging all the beds, with some minor shrub/tree pruning, as quoted. We escalated this through our credit card company, including copies of the original ticket and all correspondence with the vendor. They researched the issue and eventually gave us a full refund of the services.
