Questions & Answers About Reporting a Bad Ad via BBB AdTruth

What happens to the report after I submit to BBB AdTruthSM?
Your BBB AdTruthSM report will be sent to the Better Business Bureau that works with the advertiser/business. (Note, advertising issues and complaints are generally handled by the BBB where the business is headquartered.) If the staff determines there is a violation of the BBB Code of Advertising or other rules, they will reach out to work with the business to improve their advertising.

Will you contact me regarding the BBB AdTruthSM report I submitted?
BBB will not contact you following your submission, unless we need additional information or possibly if you said you’d be willing to talk with the media.

What should I do if I’ve lost money or received terrible service as a result of the advertisement I reported via BBB AdTruthSM?
You should file a complaint about the business, which you can do online at: https://www.bbb.org/consumer-complaints/file-a-complaint/get-started

What if I don’t know the exact name of the business that created the advertisement?
If you are not sure of the name of the business, click on “I don't know the Business / Advertiser Name” and type in your best guess in the business name box. Please provide as much detail about the advertisement as you can in the “What was misleading or confusing” section? In this section, an open-ended box is provided for additional detail (“Is there anything else you would like to tell us about why you found the ad misleading or confusing?”).

What if I can’t remember the exact place I saw the advertisement?
Please provide as much detail as you can about the advertisement, including the type of advertisement and anything else you can recall in the open-ended box entitled, “Is there anything else you would like to tell us about why you found the ad misleading or confusing?”

What if I’m not sure about the date on which I saw the advertisement?
If you cannot remember the exact date, please provide your best guess on the date or use today’s date.

What if I’m not sure whether or not the advertisement is a true violation of the BBB Code of Advertising?
Please feel free to submit reports on any advertisement you believe is questionable. Not all reports will refer to ads in violation of the BBB Code of Advertising, but all reports provide valuable insights regarding what consumers find questionable. BBB staff members are aware of other rules regarding misleading or confusing advertising and will work with the business to bring the advertising into compliance.

How can I learn more about how to determine if an advertisement is in violation of the BBB Code of Advertising?
The BBB Code of Advertising can be found online at: https://www.bbb.org/code-of-advertising
Additional educational resources can be found at the BBB AdTruthSM website.

The search bar pulled up several company listings with the same name. How do I know which one to choose?

  1. Choose the entry that indicates the correct business name and the most appropriate location for the entity that you believe created the advertisement.
  2. If you are still not sure which listing to choose, click on “I don’t know the Business / Advertiser Name” and enter the business manually. Please provide as much detail as you can.

Will my report be shared with others?
Your report may be shared with the reported business and other BBB partners who are working to help businesses create responsible advertisements. BBB’s official privacy policy can be found online at: https://www.bbb.org/privacy-policy.
