Empowering threads: Behind the Business with Falsetto The Label in Marlborough, MA
Empowering threads
In September 2017, tragedy struck Katrina Lloyd’s life when she lost her sister Sherrie to domestic violence. After recovering from Sherrie’s murder, Lloyd wanted to keep her sister’s memory alive. “Over the years after healing, I wanted to find a way to honor her. So, I dug deep and thought, what's the best way I can honor her? And something that we always did was we sang together around the house. Growing up in church, we would sing together. My mom would always play music in the house. I’ve always had a passion for clothing and fashion. So, that's when I thought of falsetto,” said Lloyd.
The entrepreneur further explained that falsetto is a vocal technique used in singing, where the singer produces sounds in a higher pitch than their usual vocal range. “I kind of merged the two passions, both hers and mine. Falsetto is extraordinary and beautiful, and I translated that into clothing to empower women and girls.” Dubbed “Falsetto The Label,” Lloyd’s athleisure clothing seeks to remind women and girls that they possess boundless potential. “You can be anything you want to be. You can do anything you want to do,” she said.
Lloyd heat presses her designs onto hoodies, t-shirts and sweatshirts and sells them in Falsetto The Label’s online store. The business donates a portion of sales to domestic violence charities as a further tribute to Sherrie.
Falsetto The Label isn't only a business venture; it's a family affair. Lloyd’s twin daughters, Brooke and Sage, are her partners in creativity. For instance, one of her twins inspired one of the line's most popular designs. “My daughter Brooke always loves to be called ‘Brookie cookie.’ So I thought of tough cookie.”
Lloyd launched Falsetto The Label in June 2023 and noted it’s gaining momentum in the marketplace. “I've gotten some good traction. I’m networking with other small businesses through the Better Business Bureau and other organizations. So, it's gone well.”
Lloyd primarily promotes her clothing line through social media and word of mouth. “I'm on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.” Lloyd shared that her daughters wear the designs to school, and other kids want to know where to get the look.
When asked about her plans for Falsetto The Label, Lloyd said, “I'm now looking to expand not only offering just t-shirts and sweatshirts and hoodies. I want to offer an assortment of clothing and accessories for women and girls like cardigans, shorts, leggings and jewelry. I'm going to collaborate with other small businesses whose missions are also to give back.”
Raised in Delaware, Lloyd moved to the Philadelphia area as an adult. She relocated to Massachusetts three years ago with her family and runs Falsetto The Label in Marlborough, MA. Lloyd has embraced her new locale. “I love going into Boston because it's a smaller city. I'm used to Philadelphia, and it's quite big. Boston is by the water and is walkable. I just love the area and the people. I've met so many great people and friends here as well. It's just a great area. I love it. It's just very peaceful.”
