Nurturing the next generation of voice talent: Behind the Business with Such a Voice in South Burlington, VT

(Such a Voice)

Nurturing the next generation of voice talent

Founded in 1989, Such A Voice has been at the forefront of voice-over training and talent development for over three decades. The company's journey from a single classroom in the Northeast to a nationwide and online presence is a testament to its commitment to excellence and innovation in the voice-over industry.

The inception of Such A Voice can be traced back to the late 1980s, when our founder, who was a commercial producer, frequently found himself training voice talent on the job. Recognizing a significant gap in quality training for aspiring voice-over artists, he took it upon himself to create a program that would provide well-rounded, professional training. This vision laid the foundation for what would become one of the most respected names in voice-over education.

Such A Voice services include one-on-one, voice-over coaching sessions, personalized and state-of-the-art demo production services, cutting-edge marketing techniques, home studio set-up, recording assistance, plus lifetime support to ensure students have all the tools needed to build a successful voice-over career.

“Today, we offer what I feel is the most comprehensive voice-over training and demo production services program,” CEO, Ben Werlin said. “We do it all in house with our extremely talented team of working voice-over professionals. They're the lifeblood of the company, and for the students, they make all the difference for their successful entrance into the world of voiceover!”

At the heart of Such A Voice is a simple yet powerful mission: to provide students with the framework necessary to thrive as successful and profitable voice-over professionals.

”We are in a service based industry and put a ton of care into the experience our clients have with us,” Werlin said. “The important values that we share include integrity, compassion, empathy, optimism, dedication, passion, progressive thinking, and teamwork. This mission is carried out with heart, patience, and care, ensuring that our clients experience the highest level of service.”

The evolution of Such A Voice has taken several turns and hasn’t always been easy. What started as basic, voice-over classes taught to people in classrooms, has developed into a nationwide, online service.

“When I first joined the company in 2003,” Werlin said. “We taught our classes only in the Northeast and farmed the voice-over training work out to other producers. Today, we offer a full spectrum of voice-over training programs and do it all in-house by a team of working voice-over professionals who bring their real-world experience to our students."

Like any business, Such A Voice has faced its share of obstacles. Offering payment plans to students once cash flow issues were created, but with a multi-pronged approach, the company figured out how to offer flexible payment options while maintaining a healthy cash flow. The COVID-19 pandemic presented another significant hurdle, forcing the company to pivot its business model to a completely online format quickly.

This swift adaptation ensured that students could continue their training without interruption, showcasing the company's resilience and commitment to its mission.

Technology is a cornerstone of Such A Voice's operations. The company utilizes robust customer relationship management (CRM) and scheduling tools, Google Drive for team collaboration, and the Better Business Bureau for garnering reviews. These integrations streamline operations and enhance the overall experience for both students and staff.

“I’ve been with the company since 2003, and the best part of running Such A Voice is thinking outside the box and solving problems creatively,” Werlin explained. “I really enjoy collaborating with our talented and passionate team and consider myself very fortunate to work with them. Both Such a Voice and the voice-over industry itself, is very flexible, which gives both our students, our team, and me the ability to work from anywhere. I’ve been fortunate enough to take advantage of this by spending most of the year living in the Dominican Republic. This flexibility underscores the versatility and appeal of a career in voice-over.”

Such A Voice is dedicated to supporting the voice-over community through donations and involvement with organizations like the National Association of Voice Actors (NAVA), The Brad Venerable Fund, Voices of the Global Majority, and more. This commitment to community extends beyond business, fostering a supportive environment for voice-over artists everywhere.

For those interested in exploring a career in voice-over, Such A Voice offers an introductory voice-over class on its website. This webinar provides valuable insights into the industry and helps participants determine if voice-over is the right fit for them.
