      Hi ******,

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. We have reviewed this situation and it appears as though there are certainly a few mistakes to correct, including some paint roller flecks on your floor, a dented wall that was not filled, and a window sill that needs to be touched up to prevent flashing. We have reached out to you through the provided email and phone number; if you are able to call back *****'s district manager, ********************* at ************ at your earliest convenience we will be more than happy to have a team come back to address these issues.

It appears, however, that many of the photos in your review show areas that were not included in the options you booked to have completed with us. Your contract of $871.41 + tax, for which you paid a 20% deposit of $182.99, included a feature wall, small edge wall in the stairwell, the awning panels of a window, and the railings/********* in the stairwell, as well as a spot touchup to cover water damage on the ceilings. These areas were all completed, less the touch ups already mentioned. The total value of all the options on your quote is for $2,210.37, but the additional items were not booked at the time of the estimate. We believe there may have been a miscommunication with ***** on what areas were included. Again, ********************* will be happy to address your concerns in this area and put everyone on the same page.

      Thank you.

We hired Student Works to do our deck wish we had checked out the BBB first. We hired them July 19th to do our deck they were supposed to start the end of August and give us a 3 day ahead of time call. They did not call and they came over on July 21. They took everything off the deck and put it out by the street except the table and pressure washed it. The only thing is they didn't call so we couldn't move our car or anything. They made a total mess getting paint chips all over my car the sides of my home and my window as well as all over my shed door and there was paint chips ,dirt and leaves all over below the last step going all the way to my fence gate. They cleaned up nothing just left a total mess. The deck looks terrible **** finally called us and came by and after talking to us she said she would come by Friday and do it herself we agreed but after seeing the bad reviews and know she would have to finish pressure washing, sanding and paiting that would not be able to be done in one day like she said. We asked for our money back as well as the cost for cleaning the car **** agreed to give it all back as of today we are still waiting. This company is horrible I would never recommend them to my worst enemy. They are lucky they did not damage my car other than the dirt and paint chips on it or we would be going to to court. It was all just a shock to wake up one morning go out to check the mail and see all this mess unbelievable how they could even do this without giving us the chance to move things. They picked the wrong people to mess with as if they don't give us our full refund we will take them to court and the price they pay will be higher. Worst experience ever and now left with a mess we worry about who to hire now. I don't understand how someone can make a huge mess and not even clean anything up. Stay as far away from this company as you can We are now getting pressure from the management to get that fixed as soon as possible.

It seems there may have been some miscommunication, but $22 was emailed to you to cover your car wash. I understand that it doesn't make up for the terrible experience or your time, but we hold this helps cover your expenses. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do. I hired ******** from Student works to paint the garage. He gave a very good sales pitch. I paid the deposit. We went to ******* for a month and on our way back, I was informed that they were starting on a Wednesday. I spoke to one of the Painters, who complained that they had no access to water, bathroom or electric. We weren't given prior notice when the Painters were coming. Came back to find the lawnmower had been used and batteries not put back on charge, my ******* used and not emptied. Paint slopped everywhere...on the neighbors fence, garage roof and outside light and garage trim. Paint chips everywhere including neighbors yard. Sloppy workmanship and paint job. Fired them. But was convinced by ******** that he would finish the job. ******** got covid so we asked him 3 times not to go over there and knock on her door. He did anyway. He wanted to finish the side of the garage in her yard. She messaged me to say she didn't want him in her yard to make a mess again and cover everything in paint chips, or have paint slopped everywhere, including her hot tub Painters left neighbors gate open too. Neighbor has a dog. Sloppy workmanship, poor communication and overpriced for poor job quality.

      Hi ******,

We are sorry to hear of your experience but you have the wrong company. We are Student Works West and only operate in ********, *********************, and BC. We do not operate in *********, **. You are looking for Student Works East which is owned and operated separately from us. I will email their office to inform them, but if you wish to make a BBB Complaint you will need to put it under their account. Their company colours are Red and White and is their logo. Ours is Purple and White, so it makes it easier to differentiate.

I hired StudentWorks on May 13/2023 for a residential exterior paint job. The Salesperson was Spencer O. We went through what was required. I paid a deposit of $1295 on May 13/2023 with $5178 due upon satisfactory completion. Spencer dropped off a colour palette and we selected the colours, and work was to start Mon. July. 31, 2023. I received no updates on the status of the job throughout the process, until Spencer called and said they were done Aug. 4. If they ran into any issues throughout the process, I was not notified. The only issue I was notified about was being unable to warranty the chimney on Aug. 4. Some red trim was missed entirely and not seen until last minute, and instead of prepping it, they just painted right over the old defective paint. They didn't even scrape any loose paint or clean it. I inspected the workmanship after the crew left each day and was less than impressed. I could see evidence after the first coat of white that it was not applied evenly. I decided to wait until the final walkthrough and final cleanup to see if it would be resolved. During the final walkthrough various items were incomplete. Missing/bare spots, incomplete coverage, and none of the edgework was done up to professional standards. Edges were missed completely, door frame trims missed, overspray, paint on incorrect surfaces, downspouts and house numbers not removed and covered in overspray and paint, and stripped screws out of attempting to remove house numbers. They painted over the numbers and stripped the screws, requiring replacement. The prep was done poorly, and as a result I worry about future adhesion problems. Having been home to witness poor practices, I am wary of the quality of the overall job. I can clearly see where spots were missed and instead of agreeing to fix them, Spencer told me it was the choice of primer they used. (They selected the primer). It looked to me as if two coats were applied unevenly or not at all.

      Hi ****,

I will have my District Manager, Angelika, call you today. She lives in ******** and will arrange a time to meet you and review the work. She will make a list of everything that needs to be done, and have a more experienced franchisee and painters come back to do the work. I am so sorry again as this should have never happened. Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

The same crew was sent out. I had to provide my own quality check and "to-do" list, there was an additional two weeks of inconvenience. I ended up with a mostly decent final result. But I wanted paid professionals for a reason. I paid for the attention to detail and the service of not havimg debris all over the yard. I paid for skilled workmanship. They eroded the existing paint on my downspouts by not taking them down or masking them the first time and getting overspray all over them and physically scrubbing them off. There’s overspray all over my car that they could only get "mostly off" -- and after all this I was still charged full price! (Minus $50 Spencer covered as the cost of replacement house numbers that they ruined.) I was expecting far more than "Just Ok" when I hired Spencer for this job. His sales routine is excellent. The only thing from the company's response that actually happened was the district manager Angelika did call me. I was impressed with their professionalism. The entire rest of the experience, not so much.

      Sincerely,

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

As of Wed, Sept. 6 this has not happened. Spencer did come unannounced and attempt to address some areas of concern but again it was sloppy, rushed work compounding my concerns. The downspouts were reinstalled incorrectly and in the wrong location s with several additional holes. A vehicle was struck with a ladder, and I was left with spilled paint and no word that he was coming, let alone if he'd left. No new crew showed up because as I was told "*********** **** ** ********* ********" and the workmanship issues were not really addressed. It was just poor work over poor work. There is still primer visible in areas. Again light primer was used when the manufacturer themselves suggested a dark primer and this was not changed, even after my concerns? No refund has been received.

July 17 deposit of $545.00 Week of July 31 work was completed. We contracted Student Works Painting Cochrane to paint our walls and our railing in our entryway. We provided a sample of paint for our walls which she took and got coloured matched at Cloverdale (our sample was ****). The job was poorly done both the walls and the railing. She was to come back and fix our railing that was painted terribly and fix our walls that were painted while the filler was still wet and bubbled. We would like a full refund of our deposit or a job completed.

      1. I phoned the Sales person from Student Works, Ayla and asked for the cost of painting my 16x7 garage door and was told they did not like small jobs because there standard crews where 10 to 20 painters, and I told her, I only needed 1 or 2 at the most!2. I was told there would be a minimum requirement because it was a small job and it would be a Min. charge of $700.00 + tax 10% if I would sign up when she came over. And I said I found it high, but being ******** in the worst kind of way I was really stupid and mentioned the price was higher than I liked, but it needed to be done any way! now being ** ***** ***! And here is where things went wrong, and I was taken for a ride! Or better said being taken advantage off, and being setup!3. The Sales rep. ************************************** ************ came over with a quote, and presented me with one at $988 + Tax 10%, and if I signed it right then and there, it was explained than that she had to take away 2 painters for 2 days from a much larger team and I called that nonsense or a pure rip-off.4. Then she said that was the best she could do but wait You are having a 7 year warrantied Oil paint and undercoat, so she could save me some cost if she changed it to a 3-year warrantee oil paint. well any thing helps so she went with the first quad, back to here car and made up a new Agreement for Painting and I glanced it over and signed it, but under protest and told her that the whole over pricing quite clearly that I felt it was a rip off. 8. So, I phoned the sales representative ****, and the first thing she says, it is a contract so you signed it and that is legally binding. Well what about the paint switch deduction, but I signed it so that is the end of it. So, I asked for her supervisor Email address and did not here till the next day I phoned the head office in ********* but did not get a response at all as well. 9. So, finally the next day, her sup. ******** phoned me, and her response was, you signed it,

      30/07/2023

      Hi ****,

I have taken the time to reach out to our franchisee, Ayla, and her District manager, ********, to discuss this job and the comments that you made. I will address each point below, but first I want to comment on slander towards Ayla and SWP by saying you were scammed. You were not scammed, but seem rather confused and maybe misunderstood the situation. To accuse a company and a university student of scamming you is a serious accusation, and can cause some major damage to people's business and livelihood. **** has been in business for the past three ******* and has produced close to $600,000 worth of work with very happy customers. SWP West has been in business since ****, and produces over 20 million dollars worth of work each summer. A company cannot stay in business that long and produce those type of numbers if they were doing shady business. We will not put up with verbal abuse towards **** or any of our staff, so please in all future communication we expect it to be dealt with professionalism and maturity.

Ayla has 11 employees, and does not operate in crews of ***** painters, and at no time were you told that. Once we get in to the last two months of the summer (July and August) we are typically booked for the summer and can fit it some work, but small jobs are always hard to fill in. If its a few hours it can be difficult to schedule. **** has a minimal of a $700 job set which she explained to you in case the job was less than that. From a scheduling standpoint and the current demand for her services this practice is normal and makes complete sense. To claim that **** took advantage of you is incorrect and slander. **** showed up at your home with her clipboard and estimate form on it. The estimate form is a piece of paper she uses to take measurements and calculate her price. You have confused this form with what you called "her first agreement". When we are done collecting the measurements and prep time, we always go to our car to calculate the quote and write it out on a client agreement. That is standard practice for most businesses like this, so we are sorry you got confused but **** did nothing wrong.

We do not offer a 7 year warranty, nor does any other company in the industry. **** mentioned to you that the paint itself comes with a warranty, but that is held with the paint company and all they give is the product and no labour. Our warranty is three years (paint/labour/material), and that is printed on our agreement forms. Oil paint was banned by the ******** government over a decade ago, so again we are not sure where you got that from. Maybe you confused that as we do use a oil based primer, but both top coats are done in latex.

**** told you this job would take one person for one day, but she would need to take them off of another site with their crew to do the job for you. Due to the poor condition of the work to be done, the cost she came to was $988 plus GST. She said if you were happy with the price she would give you 10% off if you booked that day to help save her time and get it in the schedule right away. This was made aware to you when she first called you to schedule the quote. At no point in time were you forced to do the job, and you are always welcome to get as many quotes as you wish. You agreed to the work and signed off that day.

We only had one painter show up to your home, but he was brought there by ****'s production manager. He was there to drop off the equipment, paint, and painter. How are you able to accuse someone of "being in the way for the other to do a proper job" is unusual and a false accusation as you do not know the dynamic of the business and how it is scaled. Our **************************, was there for over 9 hours getting the job done which you were extremely pleased with. As for the lawn sign, they took it down as they are not in need of booking more work so there is no need to continue marketing. That makes complete sense especially the time of the year. **** runs an amazing business with great customer satisfaction and is in big demand, so it is not surprising that she is no longer taking on work for the year. She has all 5 star reviews form her internal customer feedback including one from you!

Each time you spoke with **** and with ******** they told you these exact things and not just "you signed a contract". We pride ourselves on customer satisfaction as you can see from our reviews, but in this case we do not see anything wrong with what our franchisee did. She provided a detailed quote to the work being done, and she delivered on exactly what she promised. At this time we do not agree to refunding any money.

      1. **** never had two different estimate forms for you. She first came out to look at the scope of the work, and write down all of her measurements. She at no point showed you a price at that time, but she did discuss the product with you. She went to her car to calculate the price and write up the client agreement and then came back to present it to you. At no point did she have time to calculate and write up a first agreement in front of you. She wrote up the one and only client agreement in her car, she came back and presented you the price, and you agreed to it. Saying her minimum job was $700 on her initial call with you does not mean that is the cost of your job. She at no point took advantage of you. You have every right to say no to a quote and to get other companies to come quote on the work. Why would she increase the price knowing you could easily say no to it and get other quotes? **** is a very honest and sincere person, so to accuse her of this is absurd.

      2. **** said she had 11 painters, and I am sorry you think she has more, but she never said *****. Not that the number of painters she employs matters to this situation.

      3. When I used the word "them" I was referring to the painter that went to your home. I am more than happy to say that under oath in a court of law.

      4. ***** let us know he was there for a little over 9 hours. I have no reason to believe he is lying about the 30 minutes you say he wasn't there for. Could it be possible that you may be wrong in the time that he left?

      5. Our Client Agreement does say work done on consecutive days weather dependant. That is printed on the client agreement and not hand-written so clearly that is reference to jobs that are longer than one day. We don't have separate client agreements for different length of jobs.We have never had anyone confuse that by saying we should be at a job for longer than it should take. **** did tell you she would have one painter there for one long day. We are not sure where two days for two people came from, but that was never said from Ayla.

      6. Please note that the cost of jobs has gone up dramatically in the past few years. Prices you may be used to from your time building homes are not going to be the same prices today. If the price was so high why did you agree to it and why didn't you get other quotes.

      7. The garage door had extensive prep work done to it by us. It had not just started peeling, but rather been peeling for years. To say it is a simple garage door is misleading. Aside from extensive prep, it is a panelled door which takes longer to paint, so we are confident with the labour hours, paint, and material to justify the cost. We have attached photos of before the job started, after the prep was done, and the final product after having two coats of paint applied.

****, you seem to want to use your health as reasons why you booked the job, but could it also be the cause for your confusion? You are treating us like ********s that have purposely ripped you off, but that is far from the truth. We are good people like I am sure you are. You can read any of our other BBB complaints and how we dealt with them. We always make sure to fix any wrongdoings we caused, and to give our customers the service they deserve. Please ask yourself could you be confused by how this situation played out? You agreed to a price for a job, the job was done to your satisfaction, you paid the bill, and now you are demanding a young entrepreneur return money to you. I'm sorry, but we disagree with your request. We see no wrong doing in our franchisee, and do not agree to refund any money. If you wish to take it to small claims court we will be more than happy to defend our case to the judge.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because: The contract the way it is written up is totaly out of line, and I like the BBB to have a look at that first, and speak to the painter, since we discusted the problem of the estimate with him at about 3 O'clock pm when he was just finishing up the last  paint touch *** and we had a small conversation.

And I like the BBB look into if this is a valid agreement since the folowing information is missing and I am now called  a **** since **** now claims there was no updated agreement and denys every thing, well she should have put the folowing information in the Agreement to make it a valid one and it is the BBB that should make that decision.

what is missing *** make it a valid contract is:

#1 No mention is made how many days the job was estimated for!

#2 No mention is made how many painters would do the job.

#3 No mention was made when the job would be done, and J was expecting it to be the week after, but it was the Dog that woke me up when at * there where people on the front lawn.

#4 And now they deny any those left out info to be a solid legal binding contract. and I belief it is up to BBB to ask the painter for clarification. not just take ****, word for not even mentioned items in her written up, but far from complete agreement.

Pleas BBB I used to have a photographic memory, and I agree it is not 100% intact ny more, but this agreement is not a valid agreement with all the information misiing and now claimed by them ther never was a second agreement is not right and a pure he said I said , but look into the contract they do not say nothing!

Hoping you make a desision real soon because I do not whant to go into a personal fight, I should have done that right from the start, and like I said before if she would have been a man, this would never have hapened a can asure you, but I hope as the BBB you can see that.

      Sincerely,

I am having problems my computer shutting this program of every so often, and are willing to take the blame for it but it si getting very frustating so here goos the 5th time.

and not making any spelling corctions this time because that is where the problems happen most of the time and getting way, way to frustrting for me since I should realy not do it by writing in the first place.

So this whole She sais,  I sais  is bringing us no where since the estimate or the Contract is only a delusional contract since it does not spell out any thing other than that it was a brown paint and the manufactures name, but no time of the work to be done, how many days , or how many painters , absilutely zilch and I can not realy cal that a valid oiece of paper.

thenbeing told all kind of un proven since they are not marked down nowhere. in the so called estimate and me saying there where 2 of them and now AYla telling me I lie there was only one.

Well here it shows the real lie from over 9 hours of work, here is the solid proof that the painting was done at 2:53:05 when they cased the final payment and only had to do the clening up and left the property at 4:50pm

And this will be me last responce, I have been an investogator and troubel shooter for my whole profecional working life and thsi time yes I was slower but in the end, I proved to be right.

Recently we got our house painted by the student works painting team. The beginning of the transaction was pretty smooth. I mentioned I wanted a similar color and pointed out some issues I had with the ceiling. (A small dent and then the old owners had painted the ceiling. I also mentioned a few of the walls were a darker shade but you couldn't tell so I wanted it all just one color. I got a quote for just over 3K to for one coat of the ceiling, walls and baseboards. She came and did a small swatch on the wall of the colour that I picked online. It looked like it matched quite well, close enough. After the first day I was out at an appointment and got a message that one coat wouldn't be enough as there was streaks, she sent a picture. And it would be another ******* to add a second coat. She had already painted a portion of the wall to show me the difference so I didnt really have much of a choice in the matter. I informed her that it was the darker walls and that maybe only the three walls would need a 2ndcoat. At this point I was a little upset as it was more than I wanted to spend and thought as a professional she probably should've put the swatch on the darker walls if there was a chance it would need another coat.I paid for just a second coat on those 3 walls only. One of the days they were working they accidentally lit one of the drop cloths on fire in our kitchen. They shook out the cloth in our backyard and continued to use the charred cloth for the rest of the job. I was extremely disappointed in having to pick up pieces of ash that had been imbedded into the carpet and in my backyard. Once they had completed the job I noticed that not a single wall had been puttied (even though it was checked off on my invoice) and they had just painted over every dent and crack in the house. I noticed this a couple days after the job. I called to get them to come back and fix only one of the walls because it looked terrible. They ended up puttying this wall and painting it. But they only painted the parts that they putty and they used a brush not a roller so it looks awful. After this I noticed one of the walls in the kitchen was half painted and not finished. They also forgot to open the doors when painting the doorways because of this I now have an outline of grey on all 5 of my bedroom doors. I made a complaint and they phoned me and told me all they could do was come back and touch it up. I extremely disappointed in the professionalism of these students. I expected a great deal more for how much I ended up paying. This has been a huge headache and an even greater disappointment. All I wanted was a portion of my money back so I can fix the doors and walls myself. Overall I will not be contacting this company again for any painting related needs.

      Hi ******,

Thank you so much for informing us of this issues. As I said to you on the phone yesterday we are terribly sorry for this, and the job should have never gone this way or had these results. We agree that your mother paid for a good job, and we will like to make sure she is left with that. As we discussed yesterday we would love to send a veteran franchisee over to resolve all the concerns of the job, and make sure your mother is left with the end results she should have received the first time. I know you were going to speak to her to make sure this would be an acceptable solution, so please let us know and we will be happy to schedule it at her earliest convenience. Thank you for informing us and giving us the opportunity to make this right.

A quote for painting was provided for $12000. We were pressured into signing the contract on the same day and paying a $2100 deposit. The pressure was to obtain a 10% discount that would not be available if we waited. We explained we wanted to lighten the Color of the house from the medium Color we had. The quote stated 2 full coats of paint. 3 months later when picking the final Color the business owner, ****, changed her quote to add $3000 since our chosen Color was lighter than she expected and thus needed an extra coat. We argued this was in contradiction to our agreemnent but she refused to refund us the deposit. Another paint company told us two coats were plenty for the Color we chose. **** noted that on the quote sheet it stated in small print that should medium to deep and clear base colours e chosen this may change the number of coats and price to explain her new added price. But this makes no sense to the layperson since that does not sound like the light Color we picked and she did not verbally explain that to us in the original meeting. We now see that there are many similar online complaints regarding this company for these tactics - pressure to pay deposit, then increasing the quote later once she has the deposit. In our discussion requesting the refund she said she had already purchased two gallons of paint - we think this is not true since we had not agreed upon a Color yet, she had only purchased small samples (regardless 2 gallons of paint is only worth $120 maximum). If true we are fine receiving our deposit of $2100 less the $120.

We are sorry for your experience with ****. We do need to point out at no point in time were you pressured in to signing on the spot. Our franchisees are very busy trying to balance school and running their business and if their clients are able to make a decision at the time of the estimate we offer them 10% off as a thank you for helping them save time. This was something that was told to you well in advance when you booked the estimate, and was not something that was just brought up lightly. Making a claim that a young woman in business is pressuring people to sign on the spot seems to be going a little too far, especially someone who has the integrity of ****. We will admit that **** did make a mistake int he application of the test patch, but she did offer to come back and do it properly with a roller and brush. Unfortunately with the shortages in raw materials some of the substitutions the paint companies are using have affected the coverage, and in some cases whites or off whites are having issues covering in two coats. We always do a test patch in advance to make sure this won't be an issue for you, and if it is you have an opportunity to change the colour to one that does not have that issue. Did the other painter you speak about take the time to do a test patch for you to confirm? We do apologize for the incorrect techniques of applying the test patch with a foam brush, but again we were willing to come back and do it properly to confirm. We believe that this point it this project is not a fit, and have no problem refunding you the deposit. We will deduct costs of the paint $180 (please see attached receipt) and $70 for credit card fees that we incurred to process the transaction and to refund the transaction. Please confirm that you agree and we will process the payment immediately. Thank you
