Richmond Taxi Response
27/11/2023
On this day, I was driving a wheelchair van 6 passengers plus driver. A family came in and the person who spoke to me requested me to call 2 more cabs. She requested that I take 7 passengers since one was a child.I refused. I used my car radio twice to my peers with the request. She asked me to wait until the other 2 taxis come in. By law, once the passengers are seated, the meter is on. The other cabs came in and we left. The passengers may not know but the route is preset for trips once the destination is input in the tablet. The normal rate of taxi ride from ***** **** to *** ********* is $31.00.The waiting charge plus fare was $34.65. The passenger beside drivers seat (male)presented me with $40.00 and requested $5.00 change. I stepped out of my seat, went around to the passenger door (I opened the side door remotely). The lady stepped out first with 2 children. After that I pulled the single chair and moved it to the front so that the 2 passengers on the back last seats (2 seats) can come out of the minivan with ease. She probably did not see in her haste that I moved the middle seat back to the original position. The doors move automatically so passengers do not need to close the door. I reset the seat to original position after all passengers had safely exited. I thanked them and left.
I have never forced a tip from any passengers, so this passenger is no exception. The female adult passenger was extremely unhappy because there was a wait for the 2 taxicabs to arrive.Saturday evening a wait time of 20 minutes is normal in the industry.
I am a fulltime professional caregiver. I drive a wheelchair taxi which is the one these passengers were privileged to have taken. The van taxi is on the road for disabled passengers, not to avoid taking an extra cab. I hope this complainant puts clarity on the real reason for her dissatisfaction. The stigma around taxi drivers is very disturbing.
