Ad Review

On January 9, 2019, BBB requested the company substantiate the following claim found on their website: "Environmental Friendly – Our company uses biodegradable oil. Incase of any spills our environment is protected"

The company advertises being 'environmentally friendly' but does not disclose how they operate in this manner. According to Section 36 of the BBB Code of Advertising, advertisers should not make broad, unqualified general environmental benefit claims like "green" or "environmentally friendly." Advertisers must qualify general claims with specific environmental benefits. The Competition Bureau describes this practice as 'greenwashing' as it does not provide details in regards to their practices and procedures.

On January 18, 2019, the business responded, and substantiated their advertised claims.

Business response: Thank you for the email and letter re my company’s claim with respect to biodegradable and environmentally friendly products and services.  I am glad that someone is monitoring claims like that and holding companies accountable.

In the 1990’s we purchased hydraulic equipment designed to clean marine growth from the hulls of ships, particularly ice going car and truck ferries at that time.  We recognized the potential for harmful oil spills since as divers, we were using the equipment in seawater.  Accordingly, we purged the system of conventional hydraulic oil and switched to products that we determined to be technically comparable but biodegradable and therefore environmentally friendly.

We don’t use that equipment much these days. The last time I purchased hydraulic oil for it was in 2000 and the Petro Canada product at the time, that we still have on hand, is Hydraflo ECO 32.  Please see the attached literature.  It states that it is non-toxic, inherently biodegradable and recyclable, plus “Tested as more than 60% biodegradable within 28-90 days”.

I trust that this information will be sufficient for you to confirm that my claim of environmental friendly and bio-degradable on our website are justified.
