With the goal of moving from *** ********* to ******* requiring a long distance mover, I began researching local movers and contacted Smart Movers in hopes of a smooth and quick transition. The general timeline proceeded as; Aug 23rd discussed moving date and estimate Oct 2nd finalization of move date and down payment on movers fee Oct 15th movers arrived around 9am, provided boxes and loaded truck left around 12 I then left for the airport under the impression that in around 14-24 hours my belongings would be joining me having been given no prior knowledge that there would be a delay. On Oct 16th after multiple calls to try and learn the current status of delivery, was told they hadn't even left yet and wouldn't up to a week as well as started demanding final payment ahead of time before the move was even completed whilst simultaneously began making offensive and ridiculous claims towards my previous dwelling regarding cleanliness and blaming a workers supposed illness on the premises which is highly unlikely from a medical perspective as it nothing would incubate that quickly. Oct 17 Was able to finally talk and they flat out denied doing their job but still demanded to be paid Oct 18 police involvement, J*** ***** , company owner feigned ignorance with officer and then promised to release items minus a "storage fee" I tried to explain to the officer this was a tactic to still scam us for money and was ignored, later was contacted by J*** who demanded $1900 for release of my possessions. The nature of the dispute is; failure to provide the service agreed upon inappropriate conduct unsuitable paperwork outright theft and then extortion by making hostage of $5000+ worth of property unrightful delay of delivering possessions The business has not tried to solve this problem and instead escalated it by flat out refusing to communicate in a civil manner, the owner is beyond two faced having fooled the police whilst immediately continuing his illicit scamBusiness response

The list you provided was practically spot on and the price as promised is pretty well as promised.. I do have some issues though of which we are not being compensated for . One , your items were not ready to be picked up and we had to provide boxes ( I did adjust the invoice to reflect providing boxes ) The extra time it took to pick up your items because you were not ready . Also the filthiness of the apartment was way beyond normal , so bad one of our staff was sick today because of it. I raise these legitimate complaints one , because you are now acting as if the cost is a surprise , of which I am a little taken aback , as this was previously agreed upon after you had provided a list and I had provided a cost based on the cubic feet , after which you agreed and sent a deposit to make your reservation . As for delivery , I had previously spoken to you of an average window of 7 to 14 days depending upon our schedule. I am rejecting this response because:
The "response" in question does not try to resolve the issue of making no attempt to complete the service they were hired for. The "contract" they had stated transport from *********** ** ******** , with NO mention of delays in leave date NOR secondary or tertiary stops or unloading and reloading of items. It most certainly did not state that possessions can be used as collateral and made no mention of the absurd and unethical demand of full payment before any service was provided. Adding on to this the sheer rudeness of how things were handled, upon trying to find out the status of transit I was told they had to wait for the truck to check in, whilst the owner CLEARLY knew already it was on its way to an unapproved location to be unloaded and used for extortion at his leisure. My fathers remains were among the contents, so while possibly unintentional this does not however reduce the fact that by his unethical business practices he has caused me great emotional harm as well as financial in the hundreds of dollars I have had to spend to keep myself going while trying to have my possessions arrive so that I can live.As stated before and to Jeff personally my main concern is the release of my possessions that are being held unlawfully, which would end this matter. As Jeff hopefully has noticed by now I will not stand idly by while he attempts to con me out of money he has no right to, nor will I accept his disgusting behavior of detaining other peoples belongings without contract or their permission.

**** ****** It appears this customer previously had a willing partner to pay for his move and that partner backed out . That is the only reasonable explanation of why this customer has refused to pay for his move. The only other explanation is that they never intended to pay for the move to begin with and we ended up being nothing more than a garbage pickup service ( clean out the apartment )Customer response

I am rejecting this response because: **** ***** is clearly dodging the issue of his gross incompetence, lack of ethics , blatant theft and attempted extortion. All funding has always been secured and prepared, J*** was told THIS when he started making his unacceptable demands of full payment without doing any work, we told **** , you can DO THE JOB.. and GET PAID, or continue on with this and we will escalate it MORE. AND MORE. **** laughed and hung up. We got the police involved, he lied to them over the phone. We filed this complaint and he still is spewing out lies with no remorse. I don't know what kind of home life J*** ***** had growing up for him to have become such an individual as to call other peoples possessions garbage, or to hold someone's FAMILY MEMBERS REMAINS HOSTAGE. But J*** ***** needs to realize he is in the wrong and this will not go away until he releases the property, and if a single object is damaged he WILL be paying full price for replacement, so the sooner he smartens up and contacts me with a civil and signed agreement to release my possessions to a party of MY CHOOSING, the better for him, because this will NOT END until then.Initial Complaint

The date the Smart Movers moved my husband and I to our apartment was March 24, 2023. We are both seniors in our late 60's. We had contacted Smart Movers in February to book March 24 for our move. I talked to **** ***** on the phone to ask for a quote and to ask for a discount, he told me it would cost us $145 an hour. We would be available for an ex-military discount but not a senior's discount. The amount we were charged for the move is $1755.00. The 2 young guys who moved us arrived at 11:10am and finished the job at 11:30pm. Never did we expect to be charged that amount. We were not given an invoice nor a receipt. NO DISCOUNT was given to us either. We are very disappointed in this moving company. **** ***** lied to us by saying we would be getting a discount. We have moved several times due to my husband's postings during his 24 yrs in the military. We have seen many professional movers in those 24 yrs. but these 2 young guys did not meet the criteria of professional movers. Who takes 12 hrs to move a 2 bedrooms, 1 sofa for living room, 4 chairs, 1 dinning room set with 8 chairs, 3 dressers. There was no appliances to move at all. Had about 20 med size boxes. We are beyond disappointed in this moving company. We would like to get our discount that we were told we would get. An invoice and a receipt. We have no records of this company moving us. We think 2 men should be enough for our move''
Customer was provided hourly rates ( as they agreed to ) for their 5th floor apartment move with a storage unit at the other end of the building in the underground parking . Their was a lot of walking plus a large amount of items . The 9 or so items was right on for the time it should take to do this kind of move with full dismantling and with resembling and setup . As promised customer received 15 % seniors discount . It was very unfortunate that Mrs ******* ***** was extremely rude throughout the day with our staff to the point harassment . I can't imagine how to two professional staff were able to keep their cool working under such condition s . They were beyond professional .

I am rejecting this response because: We did not receive any kind of discount (seniors or ex-military). Not even a receipt or an invoice from their so called company. Mr. **** ***** lied to me, he told me we would receive ex-military discount at the time of asking for a quote. We did not expect our move to take 12 hours to move 2 beds, 3 dressers, a sofa, 4 chairs, a little deep freeze and a 8 chair dinning room set. The time was not justified to pay $1700 at the end of our move. The movers arrived at the house at 11:00am. They did not start moving items until 11:30am. They left Fredericton, NB in the early morning of March 24 and arrived at our residence, which is in Dieppe, at 11 am. Why should we have to pay from the time they left their company in Fredericton? We live 1 1/2 hours from Fredericton? Did we have to pay for their gas? I was not told at the time of booking that the company was in Fredericton. I thought they were in Dieppe. Why did they not have a bigger truck to avoid making 2 trips from the house to the apartment? Why did they take their time in moving our belonging? I do admit to having a lot of personal items. I do admit to being rude to one of them after he told us what they wanted us to pay them. We did not expect them to take 12 hours to move us nor expect to pay $1700. This matter can be taken further if they do not agree to give us the 15% that was discussed at the time of booking. I'm very disappointed in this company from Fredericton!

I hired **** ***** to move our belongings from Mississauga to Cape Breton. The price changed but that’s not the concern. I want to pay with my ********** that he has the number for. He demands cash and threatened to leave my belongings in Moncton and charge me daily for storage if I don’t pay cash by 11 this morning. We spoke prior to the move and he asked for etransfer and I said I am not set up for that. I said I can only do credit card. He said well you know cash is king and would credit me the hst amount towards my payment. I did say well maybe I could do that. Shame on me. I gave him my credit card number on the phone and I’ve asked him to put it all on my card. He becomes very angry and won’t allow me to speak and his version is not accurate. All I want is to pay with my **********. That’s it. He told me you pay nothing other than a deposit until items delivered to your destination. Now he insists cash before it departs. He says I’m trying to steal from him and he’s going to sue me. I have nothing and he has my belongings and my credit card so where this is coming from I can’t understand. Please help. it is clearly stated in the email prior to customer contracting our services . Proof is in the emails . I have no idea why the customer is resorting to this tactic . it is costing more for everyone involved in the long run . I can only assume that she wanted the items out of storage in Mississauga that she was paying for in order to dump them on us . so sad . we drove all the way to Cape Breton , all at our company expense . costing thousands in fuel , hotel , wages , food , permits etc. ridiculous and very frustrating for a small to mid size transportation firm . We hear horror stories about moving companies , well here is the other side.Customer response

I am rejecting this response because: I have offered to pay upon delivery of my belongings. I have said that on the phone and emails. He insists I pay in advance which never agreed upon. He told me he takes a 350. Deposit and rest of payment upon destination. I have never said I wouldn’t pay for his services. He’s demanding cash in his account before loading my belongings. He has my credit card number . I was told we don’t take payment in full until your stuff is delivered except for the deposit of 350. Which he my ********** number over the phone. He sent another full threat of horendous charges and actions to be taken if I don’t pay cash first. This was never the agreement.

We inquired with SmartMovers Atlantic about our move from Smithville, Ontario to North Alton, Nova Scotia. We had told them that we had an average furnished 3 bedroom house. **** from SmartMovers Atlantic had sent us a quote (I’ve attached below), with an excel file for us to fill out and return to him. His quote was $10,762. I filled out the excel sheet and sent it to him a week prior to the move. I followed up with him twice after sending to ensure that he saw it, once by phone and once by email. I did not hear back from **** and assumed the original quote was still valid. The day of the move came, they picked up all of our furniture and I asked again for a quote. The mover said that he could not provide one and that **** will reach out to us the following day with the invoice. **** had sent us an invoice for $20,779. When we reached out to him in shock, he said that we had more than we told him and there was nothing he could do and we had to pay it in order to have our belongings delivered to us or they would go in storage where it would incur further charges we would be responsible for until we paid. We eventually gave in and paid to get our personal belongings. I attempted to settle the issue with **** however he was not willing to hear anything from us and stated that we were trying to scam him. I attempted to explain to him that what he was doing is against the consumer protection act and he insulted me and hung up.Business response

Are the mirror cartons for any size mirror.
What are the crate and containers for?
Additionally, it looks like some of the formulas are not working correctly.

They are the cubic foot size of each box 1.5 , 3.5 , 4 and 4.5 etc. are box sizes ( these are average size everyday size boxes for moving , nothing out of the ordinary . Question # 2 Most mirrors boxes are telescopic i.e. adjustable for most average size mirrors . Cates / containers are rubbermaid brand or plastic containers you would use for storage / packing for a move etc. Most people have these in their homes to use as storage so it would be you providing the number you have on hand. Response from customer 1 week prior to already reserved moving date >> June 26 - 2022 My apologies for the delay in getting this back to you. Things have been quite hectic. I've attached the excel spreadsheet below. I did the best I could filling it out, I believe it to be mostly accurate.
customer followed up june 28th to make sure the excel spreadsheet was received > Just wanted to follow up and make sure you received the below email.No request was ever made to revisit the original quotation . As promised from the very beginning the cost per cubic foot is guaranteed not the overall cost as the overall cost is strictly dependant upon the amount of items the customer decides to ship.
It is also important to note that this was all conducted online . Hence the lack of the guarantee of an overall price as no onsite estimate was ever provided nor could be as the customer was informed we do not and could not provide and inhome estimate . What was requested was a detailed list / pictures and or fill out the excel spreadsheet that we provided .
