Bait and Switch Scam I won an auction on Maxsold for a porcelain vase and wood stand. I paid for it and made an appointment to collect it. The vase was described as Antique Japanese. I am an antique dealer specializing in Asian porcelain and stands. It was obvious from the Maxsold photos that the vase was fraudulently represented as antique (it was modern, and worth very little). The wood stand however was authentic, and worth $200-300. ie, I won this lot for the valuable wood stand, NOT the fake Japanese vase. My pickup appointment was at 10am (the first available pick up time). I was first in line, and the first ****** picking up (I got there early, and the line formed behind me). The seller then told me they had given the stand to someone else by mistake (pretty hard when I was the first in line!). They then tried to pass me off with the fake vase. When that didn't work, they admitted they realized I probably won this lot for the stand (apparently they recognized my name). I got scammed on Maxsold. This scam is simple. A worthless and valuable item are listed together on Maxsold. If the auction lot sells for a lot of money, then you get both. If it goes for a low price, then you are offered the worthless part only. I left the worthless vase with the seller. This scam cost me an hour of my time driving back and forth, plus the time bidding on the item. Plus the time dealing with Maxsold to try and get my money back. The only reason Maxsold gets 1 star, is because there is no option for Zero.Maxsold Estate Sales

We understand this is a frustrating situation, and we hope it never happens, but sellers may on occasion misplace goods. This was a seller run auction, and Maxsold had no employees on site , we are just the platform the seller used to list their goods.
The refund to you was processed the very same day for the amount you paid for the goods. You can read the auction Terms and Conditions on our website, notably sections 21 and 22 for more information.
Again, apologies for the inconvenience.

MaxSold is not, in my opinion, a great sellers tool. My items were sold to bidders for practically nothing on the last day of the auction. I had a discounted entry fee for joining of $49 which left me less than $100.Your best to sell on Kijiji or Marketplace or Poshmark, ask your price and take lesser offers if you choose. Ill never use MaxSold again. Its not for me.Maxsold Estate Sales

Thank you for taking the time to share your review. While we strive to ensure that all auctions are successful and that our sellers have a positive experience, we understand that Maxsold may not be the best fit for every situation. Feedback like yours is valuable and is shared with our sales and operations teams. When you spoke with our Sales team, you mentioned having a collection of plumbing items and copper fittings to sell, but there was no mention of items like old VHS tapes, a hutch, or shelves. Our team explained that a successful auction typically features a variety of items and requires at least 20 items to attract interest. However, you chose to proceed with an auction containing only 8 items. When you spoke to our operations team about booking your start/end dates, they suggest adding more items to improve your auction's chances of success, but you declined. Given the limited quantity and nature of the 8 items, we agree that alternative platforms such as Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji might have been more suitable for your needsReview fromRichard K

Went to pick up my items, I arrived several minutes early. After I collected all my items I realized one lot was missing. It turns out the people running the pickups allowed a person who arrived earlier to take my large lot, over 30 books and of significant value. I told the person running things to get in touch with the person but after calling MaxSold corporate office, he was told no and to tell me I would have to file a claim for a refund. I spent hours researching the items, a refund is not enough compensation and I only want what I won and paid for.Maxsold Estate Sales

The auction was not run by maxsold, but by the seller, so we can only relay messages having not had any of our employees on location. Though they did misplace the books at the time you were there, we did contact the seller and later made arrangements with you to get the missing items. We apologize for the inconvenience but it did work out in the end.Review fromEm M

1 starI read through the complaints as result of having had a number of occurrences where I bid on something and as the lot was being closed it indicated "winning" following by "won". I wanted to see if anyone had written a complaint as not only was it disappointing to have thought I won something only later to find out the supposedly "closed" lot kept accepting bids but it also then created a situation where in order to make a trip worthwhile (thinking I had won the item I wanted), I then bid on other things to maximize the value of the trip.On looking at the BBB, I saw in fact there was a complaint filed with the BBB in April of 2024 with the following detail: "Placed a bid on maxsold. Watched the bid say winning as it was closing. Bid closed, said that I had win the bid, went to book a time to pick my item up and said I had been outbid on the item! I literally watched the timer expire on my bidding item, said I won but apparently I didn't and some how had lost after the timer had expired. When you are bidding on a high value item to only have it ripped away from you after you've won the bid is not only disheartening but completley wrong for a business to do thatand should have consequences for their actions."There was also a response provided also in April as following: "Business response 16/04/2024 ****,We are sorry to hear about the challenges that you faced during bidding. Our aim is to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all bidders. We referred the issue over to the tech team, and it seems like unfortunately there was a technical issue on the site that caused the situation to arise, we do apologize most sincerely for you disappointment. The tech team have been working through the issue to ensure that is does not affect future auctions.Thank you so much for bringing this feedback forward.Team MaxSold"Clearly this issue has not been fixed and it has been 4 months since they indicated they were going to ensure it doesn't happen again.Review fromF.D. 1 starSelling on Maxsold didn't work out for me. I ended up pleasing my bidders who got my items for next to nothing, I might as well have donated my items instead of spending all my time setting up my auction. Then to top it all, I got $0 as Maxsold took the remaining money. What a waste of my time. Please read the fine print before agreeing to their agreements.Review fromPamela V

2 starsI've been successful/unsuccessful in purchasing from Maxsold. The last auction really drained me. I picked up one of my lots - part of which was 2 fish bookends made out of soft stone. The tip of the fin was literally falling off, hanging by a thread, like a tooth. The other fish had obvious glue marks, chunks taken out of it. I was told by the vendor the listing stated "has vintage wear conditions.' I think broken and chunks missing is ***************** wear. I also bought a hooked rug that featured as beige in the photos. At the pick up the rug was some strange mustard colour. Useless and ugly. Disappointing. At the end of the day, after spending 150 dollars with fees, I felt like I left with mostly a box of junk that will go to a thrift store if they want to accept it.Review fromSarah D

5 starsI love maxsold. I buy and I sell. This is a wonderful site that allows unused, unwanted items to be repurposed. If an item is listed as works plug it in at pickup. If it doesnt work, you can refuse it at the pick up and get a refund. I dont understand all these negative reviews. Its a great business idea and saves stuff from heading to landfill.Review fromDean M

Scammers. As a buyer they totally misconstrued the authenticity of the items on multiple auctions around the ******** ** area. I was warned about them more than once and I wish I had listened. Furthermore...they were especially ruthless through the pandemic! As a buyer I suggest you run hard, far and as wide as you can from these crooks. If you are thinking of using them as a seller ... I suggest you take stock on what kind of human you are and whether or not you believe in Karma.Good luck and kind regards Signed I should have listened.Maxsold Estate Sales
