The greenest grass is often under your feet: Perspective on business growth

Paula Fleming, CMSO, discusses how the greenest grass is often under your feet and provides her perspective on business growth. (July 29, 2024)

As the CMO of the Better Business Bureau (BBB), I constantly hear people talk about the grass being greener on the other side. Whether it's an employee who thinks they would be happier at another company, or a business owner who thinks they would be more successful in a different industry, it seems like everyone is always looking for something better.

But what if I told you that the greenest grass is often right under your feet?

I'm not saying that you should never consider making changes in your business. In fact, I believe that it's important to be constantly evolving and growing. However, I also believe that it's important to appreciate what you have before you go looking for something else.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Your business is unique. There is no other business like yours in the world. That means that you have a lot to offer your customers and clients.

  • You have a lot to be grateful for. Take some time to think about all of the things that you are grateful for in your business. This could include your employees, your customers, your products or services, and your location.

  • There is always room for improvement. Even the most successful businesses can always find ways to improve. So don't be afraid to set some goals for yourself and your business.

If you're feeling like the grass is greener on the other side, I encourage you to take a step back and appreciate what you have. You might be surprised at how much you have to be grateful for.

  • Focus on your strengths. What are you good at? What are you passionate about? Focus on these areas and you'll be more likely to succeed.

  • Don't compare yourself to others. Everyone is different and has their own unique path. Don't waste your time comparing yourself to others.

  • Set realistic goals. Don't try to do too much too soon. Set realistic goals for yourself and your business and focus on achieving them.

  • Celebrate your successes. Take the time to celebrate your successes, no matter how small. This will help you to stay motivated and keep moving forward.

By following these tips, you can learn to appreciate the green grass under your feet and grow your business to its full potential.
