I would not recommend Dr. Rubio to anyone, and I would certainly not give him permission to privately discuss anything with family members. Dr. Rubio was my therapist for *** ** ***** years. During my sessions with Dr. Rubio, he asked if I would allow him to contact my daughter, who was the main subject of our therapy. I verbally agreed to this, thinking it would be similar to family counseling, where I would be privy to the conversation. However, he later only gave me HER email replies, cutting of his comments to her. I felt it somewhat strange at the time, since he was my therapist, acting on my behalf, and with my permission. I felt I should have had full knowledge of the entire discussion, but I did not push my request. As time went by, my daughter began, and continued, to throw the conversation with him in my face, indicating that his comments to her reinforced her own feelings about our relationship, which confused me. I quit therapy at that time. She later sent a screen print, reinforcing this, and it was quite obvious he may have reinforced more of her feelings, by discussing issues about me he claimed to agree with her on. This seemed to add fuel to the disagreement, and seemed to cause more friction in our relationship. It also appears to lack proper ethics. I have asked repeatedly for this communication. I have not asked for process notes, which I know he can refuse to send. I have asked for the communication he conducted on my behalf, which he had to have my permission to do. I sincerely feel I should have had access to the entire discussion, including his comments, as he was my therapist NOT hers. He refused, saying he wanted a virtual meeting to “explain” the emails, which I felt stood on their own lack of merit. I refused a meeting knowing he still would not give me his comments, and he replied that consultation with his colleagues demonstrated this was best practice. My feeling is that his ethics may be questionable.

I am not refusing your request to go over the emails from your daughter. Details contained in emails (and text messages) are open to misinterpretation. Reviewing those emails from * years ago suggest misunderstandings between you and your daughter. I am sorry to hear that after all that time things are no better between the two of you. In order to avoid, or at least minimize any further misunderstanding, I propose that we arrange a time to go over the emails together. This way I can help clarify any information and provide the necessary context to ensure you understand everything in a supportive environment. Please know that this decision is made out of concern for your well-being.

The above resopnse was sent to the individual. As can be seen i did not refuse to share the emails with her, but wanted to discuss the emails in a supportive environment so as to avoid further misunderstandings. I was also advised by my attorney that since it has been almost 7 years since the encounter, and the emails involved another individual, i am required to get their written consent as well.

In response to my therapist reply, I have no desire to talk to this man, for aforementioned reasons, regardless of his comments about “concern”. I never gave any written permission for him to communicate with my daughter and my lawyer informs me this should have been a condition, particularly since his comments to her were not revealed to me. Furthermore if I wanted to press this, it is pretty clear he was unethical on more than one level. I never questioned it until it was obvious that he had betrayed me by discussing our private conversations and not revealing what he had told her. He was my therapist, not hers. I was advised by a lawyer that pursuing it would require more emotion, finances, and communication with my daughter that I would want to expend, at a time that emotions remain high. My purpose here is to advise others that I believe he is unethical, as I have already advised two friends I recommended him too what I learned about him. I would not recommend him to anyone.
