I am going to start my review by pointing out a simple fact on how internet sevice connections function. The isp, in this case mediacom, sends a signal from a central hub to a localized node, of which parries that signal to your router or modem. The area you are attached to is directly linked to a node bank that has roughly 4-8 network lines with an unkown number being transponders that serve as transit lines for packets of data being sent out and recieved through the hub station and the client. Now let's say that this network if fully wired with fiber optic cable and not wireless transponders. By that notion, fiber optic cables currently transmit at an average speed of 100 mbps, with a maximum distance of 2k or **** mi per length of cable. knowing this, if you take into account the distance from your modem to the node, and the distance from the node to the main hub. The cable is unlikely present for the entire length of travel from point a to point b. Now that I have clarified how the internet functions, lets address the problem with this particular service. Mediacom offers its customers 1gbps download and 50 mbps upload, by that standard through the same fiberoptic cable, that 1gbps speed is in fact a lie. The cable does not allow for that speed to travel any faster than 100mbps on average. To get around this Technological limit, the isp splits the packets into several channels all running in tandem with one another. If you are sending ****mbps or 1gbps of data through the channels, you would need at least 10 channels to transmit the data efficiently over a distance of **** mi. Now multiply that by every user of the same service, let's be fair and say several hundred individual homes and buisnesses. That equating to several thousand channels all transmitting data accross the network. What is problematic about this setup is that it allows for an exessive amount of runtime errors, and packet loss issues. If 1 of the 10 channels fails to send its packet or receive its packet, then the data sent is imperfect or better yet "corrupted," leading to the packet having to be resent causing latency issues. Now if the majority of the packets are lost, this results in a critical failure of transmission, usually resulting in disconnection and reconnection attempts. Mediacom i can only assume knows of these problems but advertises it service with complete disregard for the complicated issues. The consistent instability of this setup leads to many individuals not just loosing service but loosing income, since more and more people are working from home with 3 of the biggest call centers being in the cedar rapids county. This also doesn't explain why mediacom, considering its prices, does not seem to have their own hubs. As my network is sent to another buisness to be processed. There is a complete failure of customer control when it comes to selecting the target hub or regulating DNS and other modem functions, taking those abilities into full control of the isp with zero explination as to why. When asked about problems with the modem or mediacoms service, the go to response is "have you rebooted the modem?" as if that is supposed to rectify the flaws with the hardware or networking software being implemented by this company. Instead of solving the various issues, it seems that mediacom is complacent with falsify advertising a speed they cannot provide and charging a steep price for an incomplete product. Having had the service for the better part of 3 years i have had nothing but trouble and inconsistencies with the service they provide. I will be switching to another provider given the chance. I will not get into the borderline criminal monopolization of cable networking space and client areas practiced by some of the most prevalent ISPs.
