Hired *********************** and his crew to paint my home. He came out to look and saw that it was in dire need, especially a very exposed side of a wood addition. Boards were extremely weathered and what paint there was was peeling badly. Specified that part of the prep needed to include cleaning out the old caulking in the tongue and groove siding and applying new caulk to all the seams. He told me that he uses Behr paint in primer in one so once they're past the prep it will go quickly. I was quoted $2600 for labor only and that supplies and paint would be $600 more.I have bad fibromyalgia and am often bed ridden. When they started it was a bad fibro week. I came out to check on them a few times. I was seeing a lot of missed prep in areas that they seemed to be done with and asked about it. Kept getting told there was lots if prep, they're still prepping etc. Unfortunately I was resigned to my bed for most of the day.The next day they came to finish. I still saw areas on the exposed weathered wood side that looked only partially prepped. Again told, lots of prep, still prepping. When I awoke later that day they were packed up and done, and gone. I looked the place over and was disappointed to see that some of the prep issues never were done, specifically they did not do any sanding or filling of the weathered wood to make it look better, and they did not sand the areas where old paint butted up against bare wood to feather the surface. Looked bad but I grinned and beared it... At least the house was painted.Skip ahead 2.5 months. We'd been through our normal monsoon rains and winds. I looked at the wood side of the house and found that ever seam of the tongue and groove siding had the paint pulling up and peeling off. Areas where the old paint had been pulling up but not actively peeling were now peeling. They hadn't done any heating (heat gun or propane torch) during prep to remove the unadhered paint. I could clearly see in these peeling gaps that the old, dirty, peeling and cracked caulk was never cleaned out and new caulk was never applied. When I contacted them I was told that heating and sanding was never part of their process. It is standard in the industry. And that paint will come off wood surfaces... In decades maybe, not in 2 months! Said he'd be out in a week or two and that he'd pay for more paint but I'd have to pay for the "extras". Told him the caulking was agreed upon before the quote and that I wasn't paying for what the quote included.2 weeks later, contacted him again and was told he'd be out in a week or two. Reminded him that he saud that two weeks ago. Gave me a story about having had jaw surgery. Fine, 2 more weeks. He could have sent his crew for the work and just supervised. He asked what the paint color was. He'd previously stated that they kept records of colors since I was having some building done that would need to be painted later. Now he tells me they don't keep records. Luckily enough of one label was readable and the other I remembered.Decided that I only wanted him to reprep the wall and that I'd take it from there to do the additional required prep to meet standards.Looked at the original paint container so I could get the same kind and found that it was Behr e600 which clearly says that it requires a primer. No mention of being a paint and primer in one. Again, made contact. Now he's saying that he never said it was. I asked why it wasn't primed then. He said the contract was for paint only and that priming was never mentioned. So, when using a product that clearly states it requires a primer on a project where someone says they need their house painted, they don't bother including it in their process. Now, almost a month later, there is paint peeling in other areas where they didn't scrape well enough. He's obviously not coming out to fix anything. Claims they did the best they could. Told him, if this is your best, you shouldn't offer your services as painters.
