    The business is overcharging more than double the average market price for smog testing. Average market price is ***** dollars and they are charging 215 for basic smog testing. They arent up front about prices until youre already hooked up to the machine for testing. This place is a scam.

    I am rejecting this response because:

    Their response is misleading. They did not reveal the price of their service until they had already hooked up my car to their machine and started the test. It puts undue pressure on a consumer to pay immediately and does not give an opportunity to reject pricing. I paid and signed prior to the completion of the test. 

    One point of particular frustration is that when I asked the employee about the drastic price increase as I had paid closer to $50 at this same business 2-3 years ago, he said the average cost of smog testing is now $80-100, but they feel their service is worth more than that. I dont understand how a business can price ***** a consumer for what they quote as more than double the average market price. They are taking advantage of consumers and starting their services prior to actually discussing the price of their service which puts unnecessary pressure to then continue with the service.

    On Dec 8th at approx. **** I received my smog checked at the *** location. I was charged 3x as much I would have at other locations. I understand this is my fault by not asking the prices, but there was a 65 to 70 year old elderly women that stopped by the shop after I already paid. She told them she would like her money back due to them changing her $300 to have the same smog check. They did provide a service to her, but they changed her way more than I. I paid $173 for the check. Please make sure our older population is not getting taken advantage especially during the holidays. I will not be going back to this location. Thank you.

    12/02/2022 $148.24 I went to get a smog for my new vehicle. The gentleman had me sign everything and before he started I called my husband to discuss what was said. My husband told me to stop immediately because they are trying to pull a fast one on me. I asked them to stop and he refused. He was unprofessional and told me tough luck, I already signed and he didnt care. I repeatedly asked him to stop and he said no. The price did not match the service provided. He was arrogant and laughing in my face.

    On 9/3/22 I found a coupon online for a smog check at ******** in ********** for $31.99 + $8.25 ** certificate and I went. When I arrived I told the guy what I wanted and showed him the coupon. He agreed. After he completed the test he quoted a cost of over a hundred dollars, then later reduced it to $86.When I asked him why, he said there were extra costs because the vehicle was purchased in 2017 and I didnt get it smogged when I first got it. I did not purchase my car in 2017 and it was exempt from smog until this year because its a model year 2014.He mentioned extra fees for Star, and said the coupon had expired. Coupon states Expires: December 10, 2022. He also referred to the terms and conditions of the coupon. None of the exceptions applied to our standard 4-passenger vehicle.When I disagreed with the charges and referred back to the coupon he became upset. He spoke fast and sounded irritated. His behavior escalated and he became mildly aggressive and started using foul language, saying Im just trying to cut you a f****** deal so you can get your f****** certificate. No deal needed to be cut because my vehicle passed the test with no problem. He went back and forth with me about giving me the smog certificate and told me to return on Tue, 9/6/22, and pay him an additional $25 to get it.

    I have been to this Business before to get my vehicle smogged as they regularly offer online coupons. The 1st time in 2018 and there was no issue. They honored the coupon and my vehicle was smogged. Today my niece took my vehicle in to have it smogged as I was ill. She had a coupon from their online website. The owner did not tell her a price before hand rather started work on the vehicle while then writing up the information - all being done with an android app. He then informed her after the vehicle smog procedure started that the coupon did not apply and she should have read the fine print. The charge was $50.00 more than the coupon price and about $20 more than other neighboring smog dealers. She called me and I said he needed to honor the coupon her refused and would not relinquish the vehicle. She went ahead and paid him and I did inform him that I would be filing a complaint. That his website did not have any fine print and was a straight forward off for a designated price. In the past you can download the coupon directly from the website or snap a pic on your cell phone. This time they ask for your email address and then forward a tiny 1/2 inch coupon. He stated that there was fine print on the coupon that said the smog was only for transfer title situations. However, on their website it says nothing about any exceptions. I suggested he make it more clear that it was misleading and due to the discrepancy he should honor the price. He refused. He also took advantage of young person by not presenting paperwork designating the price prior to inspection of the vehicle or providing a receipt. Furthermore, there is no option to increase the size of the coupon. I clicked every image to enlarge the coupon so as to read the aforementioned fine print. There is a Brake and Light Inspection coupon that is full size and easily readable, but they do not display the Smog coupon in the same readable size. When asked for a receipt they printed up a fake receipt.

    I have not read the business response as it was not included in your correspondence. The link if there was one did not work and it was unclear as to how I was supposed to respond with more information. The reply stated that more action on my part was necesary but there was no way for to respond directly nor direction as to how I was supposed to respond.

    Consequently I am using this form to relay information to you.

     

    The date of the incident was August 6, 2022@12:37PM. The Service provided was a biannual Smog Check. My niece took my car in for me as I was ill and could not drive. Her name is *****************************. She asked if the coupon was valid and was told yes. Then after services were performed denied the coupon and charge twice the normal rate for a smog check. Please inform me as to how I can read the Business's response and how to reply to correspondence directly

    I am rejecting this response because: there was no estimate given. the owners created documents after the fact. When I went down to complain they then produced some false documents made after the fact. meaning the vehicle had been pulled in and worked had started. when the estimate was produced and work was denied. They stated that the work had already been started and the charge had to be paid. No work should ever be started on a vehicle prior to authorization in any situation.

    I went in on 5/9/22 to get my brake/light inspection. Online it quotes $99.99 for this. I showed up, they did the brake and light inspection before I signed any paperwork. Then they told me "it will be $400 once we run your VIN." As a female, I felt uncomfortable arguing with an auto body guy in ********** and since he technically already did the inspection, I felt trapped. He ran my VIN and charged me the $400. The business's website is dishonest and should not be pressuring people into paying 4x the amount once they show up and only tell them it will be that higher price after they conduct the inspection.     I am rejecting this response because: The price was not told to me until after the inspection was completed. The only thing between them telling me the price and charging me was running my VIN. It is illegal to not give an estimate PRIOR to services being performed. In addition, I put inspection in quotes because they did not fulfill their end of the contract. They had me turn all the lights on to make sure they worked and whatnot but in terms of the brake inspection, the only thing they did was ask when was the last time you had your brake pads replaced? And I answered oh I dont know, that would be a question for my dad.     They are relying on my signature as part of a contract. While my signature isnt valid because they didnt give me the estimate beforehand and therefore I was put in a spot where I didnt feel I could question it because they had already completed the inspection, they also did not do a brake inspection therefore the contract was broken (by them)  and my signature is void. Not only is this fraudulent, it is also a safety concern.

    On 5/7/22 I went to this business for their advertised ***** brake and lamp inspection. When it came time to pay it was ******. When asked about the price on their website, signs and business cards they stated I had to ask for that price prior to the inspection and since I didn't each inspection was ******. This is their clearly and plainly advertised price. I shouldn't have to ask for their advertised price. The business card and website do not state this is a requirement for the price. I asked them to honor their price and they said if you dont like it file a complaint with the agencies that do that.
