On July 24, 2023, I went to the ** with a bad oil burn to my leg. Dr. ********************** came to the ** and said I may have 3rd degree ***** and needed to check in right away and have a surgery and possibly skin graft the next morning. He did not tell me I could wait. He did not tell me he did not take my insurance. Later that night he came alone to my room and said I had to sign a document waiving my rights because he didn't take my insurance and he doesn't like the rates they pay when not contracted due to the No Surprise Billing Act. I didn't know what to do. He made it clear if I didn't sign he would not do the surgery. I was in a hospital bed with IVs and on morphine and Norco. I signed under duress. Because they submitted the bill as a non-emergency service and because I signed this form, he's wanting me to pay $10,351.06. The billing office said had ***** negotiated a rate, they would discount me a small portion and I would owe $7,504.09. However ***** never negotiated. I do not have this chunk of money. And I feel it is not only unethical what they did, but it seems illegal the way they are skating around the No Surprise Billing Act. How was this not an emergency service when I was in the ** and they moved me to a room from there? Additionally they did not provide proper information or disclosures. I am at a loss as to what to do. I do not believe I should owe anything. This should have been processed properly as an emergency service. I appreciate your help in looking into this matter. Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything else.
